Elsa Went Out Side Today

I have convinced Yeti and Yuki (by accident) that the outside while fun to watch, is a terrible, horrifying place to actually be. I had them in jackets with leashes Friday night for their second outdoor experience. The first time was when the first snow piled up here and they despised the cold snow.

Friday evening I took them outside and before I could put them down they were caterwauling and climbing over me to try and get back in the house.

They no longer try to go out the door. While that is good, it does kind of dash my plans to walk them at the pet store.

Glad to see Elsa doing so well and enjoying the outdoors. She is such a cool kitten. :)
Poor kitties! I know it's fun to think about walking a cat outdoors or at the pet store, but personally I'd much rather have cats who are afraid of the outdoors and forgo that particular activity, then ones who can't wait to get outside to the point where they try to escape without me...

Don't give up Tort, you just need to take things slow. May never come to be, but don't give up after just an attempt or two.

With Chongo I think it was his third or fourth venture outdoors before his feet ever hit the ground. On subsequent trips, if he wanted to go in I just let him walk to the door, picked him up and brought him inside. Once he had figured out that I wasn't going to force him to be outside and he could retreat indoors when he wanted he was pretty good about things. Of course he would always make a beeline to the tallest grass, shrubs or leaves to investigate, but generally liked being outdoors.

Oh and that was always part of the deal when we were at the vet's office, a good walk outside until he was ready to go home. He definitely liked being there despite all the poking and prodding.

Last item, always make sure your cat or kitten goes out the door under arm! They need to believe the key to getting outside is being strapped up and you carrying them. This helps relieve future door darting incidents.

I also think you will have better success if you work with one cat at a time - that way you don't have two cats panicking at the same time. As John says, once they realize that they can retreat any time they want, they are not so afraid of being outdoors.

I only have one.. When I took Jake and Elsa both out at the same time, Jake just ran around the yard, and I kind of think that helped Elsa with her confidence.

Sorry, I was responding to Tort518 regarding taking out one cat at a time.
