Savannah Child
Nicole,
I am no expert but I have recently brought two Savannahs into my home, male and female F5's, so I thought I might weigh in. Hopefully my experience will add to your research rather than confuse you more
My cats just over 10 months old at this point so they are likely not quite fully grown (I'm not sure how long they will grow yet) so take all of this with a grain of salt.
I was drawn towards savannahs because they have amazing markings and because I had seen pictures of long tall cats. I have always been a dog person but at this point in my life I live alone and travel too much to have a dog so I figured I would get a couple cats but if I was going to do that I would get "cool" cats or "huge cats". My mom feeds a bunch of cats at work so I'm used to having them around and seeing different personalities. Originally I wanted two males because I've seen more of them that were laid back and liked to cuddle, give and receive attention, and they seemed less standoffish. I ended up with a male and a female and now I'm happy I did. They are not "huge" cats but they are long and lean, I'm guessing 12ish pounds so far and now that I have lived with them and love them I wouldn't care if they were tiny little buggers. They seem to have more energy for exploring, playing, and getting into trouble than the cats I'm used to though, it's a great thing. They will run, they will chew on stuff (electrical cables), and they will break some things. I was worried that they might be a bit aggressive and mine are not. I shouldn't but I do occasionally let them chew on my fingers, they are gentle so it doesn't hurt (see my avatar). Funny thing is that my girl Tango is more of a cuddler then my boy cash, which is not to say he's cold or aloof since they both greet me at the door when I get home. She loves her belly rubs! Again they are still young and I can still see their personalities developing so who knows where they'll both end up.
I cannot speak of earlier generations because I've never spent time with them but if you want some of the fun without as much challenge (I'm guessing here and others can correct me if I misrepresent the truth) I would think F3-later might be a great start. You can always add to your family if you feel comfortable later.
If you already love cats, you'll definitely love a savannah, I only liked cats and I love mine. I learned a lot reading through this board and while everything has worked out well for me I think you're a step ahead for having asked for the thoughts of others before bringing a savannah home. They are truly wonderful, I wish you the best of luck in your search.
