fibrosis of the liver

Copper smear came back negative. :( Still waiting on the zinc.

Started her on Denamarin this morning. I had no idea that it was simply SAM-e and Milk Thistle in a small cat-sized tablet. So much easier than dealing with SAM-e horse pills and Milk Thistle powder!

We will begin her on a weekly B12 shot treatment for 6 weeks. In one of my many internet searches, I found a link between smooth tongue and vitamin b-12 deficiency. B-12 levels are usually lacking in cats with liver disease so this should help.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the B-12 helps. What is SAM-e?

S-Adenosyl methionine or SAM-e is the artificial version of something the body produces. It is good for Osteoarthritis, Depression and Liver disease (help to normalize liver enzyme levels and help with cholestasis).

From the web:
One condition of the liver is reduced bile production; this can be the first step towards what is called cholestasis. Cholestasis is a symptom and means reduced state of bile formation or bile flow. Studies have shown that SAM-e opposes or wards off this cholestasis state of the liver.

Another cause of liver damage is scarring or fibrosis that ends in cirrhosis. This scarring is actually caused by excessive healing of the liver. SAM-e has been shown to alleviate this over-healing process.
