For now Rocky's just a big cat, not bobcat, can go home

I know Rafiki, BUT I was mainly referring to the action of the court in giving the cat back.
And I DO feel for her. She obviously has a bond with Rocky. Hate to see her lose him. But from what little I know of genetics, there is no way to get a mitocondrial match to a father. And other tests are inconclusive. So legend or not... Hybrid or pure, it is what it is and confusing.

And Paige I agree. The whole thing is a bunch of poo.

For hybrids, what is the reasoning behind the female typically being the domestic and the male being wild? Does it have to do with not wanting to deal with raising the babies with a full-wild-blooded female or are there other reasons? For naturally occurring matings, would a domestic cat in heat be more apt to mate with whatever cat even if he were not a domestic or would a wild cat be equally apt to mate with any available male if one outside her breed were not available?

I thought it had to do with differing gestation periods. In the case of Savannahs the Serval is 73 days I think and the domestic 63 days. IF my old man memory serves me correctly. That is why there is such a high mortality rate in F1s. The kittens are born prematurely from the Serval standpoint. At least I have read that. Not sure how accurate it is.

Plus a male domestic might have difficulty with a much larger female Serval, due to size. The Mechanics of mating.

And there is the fact that females are quite discriminating in who they mate with. Not unlike humans. Going for the strong genetics.

One reason is logistics. There aren't very many male cats of any breed who can achieve contact with a female serval or F1 female. Know what I mean? Kinda like a male tea-cup poodle trying to mount a female great dane. Sometimes the parts are too far apart.

Thanks for saying what I was trying to say and failing at. ;)

Cary, a bobcat/domestic cat hybrid is called a legend cat for a reason. They only exist in legends. While there is apparently no genetic reason why they can't breed, there is no genetic proof of a successful mating per UC Davis. That is what makes me very nervous that after all this woman has been thru, she may lose her cat in the end. To me, Rocky looks like he is pure bobcat.
You are correct, in fact several years ago a $15,000 reward was offered to anyone who could prove they have a bobcat hybrid and no one was ever able collect.
