Getting A Second Savannah

afterseven

Savannah Kitten
We purchased seconds as playmates...I use the plural because we did it in two separate home environments with two separate savannah pairings. Our 17 year old tabbies were definitely NOT suitable playmates in either environment...so the only solution was a savannah playmate. A not so inexpensive solution...but a necessary one for all parties concerned.

I can just tell you that having seen it happen twice now...it takes exactly 32.76 seconds for the new savannah to bond with the older savannah..in our case age gaps of about 3 months, with a 12 week old kitten meeting up with a 6 month old 'kitten'. Actually it took a bit longer than that with 5 day quarantine and all that stuff. But you get my drift. They became instant buddies...and when we get all 4 together it only takes a few minutes to break the ice. The older 6 month old 'kittens' which live separately, failed to bond with existing house pets...Both F3's...although there were brief moments of 'cuddle' along the way...never sustained...infrequently repeated. The newer kittens f2 & f3 respectively each bonded with existing older tabbies and with their 'older' savannah cousins. So just based on observations, seems to me a 2nd savannah solves a lot of domestic tranquility issues as opposed to creating new ones.

Both of the older female 'kittens' had their first heat...they sprayed everywhere...: / I can only imagine what a male would do. Having said that, from the moment we received each cat from the breeder, each cat knew where the litter box was instantaneously and used it in all cases ....except...when in heat. No real surprises there.

Savannah Super Cat
Adding a second is easy, if the second is a kitten. Have done that many times over the years. Sometimes older cats are standoffish, but the problem is usually the older cats can't handle the high activity level. Sort of like bouncing grandkids in the grandparent's house. With a F1, expect a lot of energy. I didn't have the guts to take on that early of a generation.
