Here's my dilemma. As some of you may know, my F2 savannah boy (Servo) recently passed away from HCM. It was a very traumatic experience for me. He was a good good boy; so smart and playful. All he ever wanted to do was play. We were very closely bonded. I recently contacted his breeder and she felt bad about what happened and will give me an F3 (pick of the litter) for 1500 (normal price 2500). This is a great deal. However, I question the health in the genetic line of her program. My boy had 1. Crystal urine 2. Bilateral luxated patellae and 3. HCM which ultimately caused a premature death. I am wary of spending ANY money on another cat with her because of my fears. HOWEVER, Servo's personality and temperament was AMAZING. And I'd essentially be getting one of his nephews. That thought comforts me. This is Servo's breeder:
WHAT? Your cat had 3 serious health issues and she's asking you to pay for a replacement? Yikes!
I would be very concerned about a related kitten UNLESS she's done some health testing since...
Then talk to Jennifer of Fusionkatz about the kittens she has sold this person...a great way to learn more!
I agree, what cat breeder should not be at least aware of HCM even if they don't test. And if you find out a kitten you have produced has this health issue, you should go investigate and test! Especially before breeding the parents again!
HCM is polygenetic, many genes can be involved and we haven't identified all of them yet. So Servo may have inherited some from one parent and the rest from the other and thus it is the combination of genes that was so lethal for him :-( It may also mean that the combination meant he had a more severe case of HCM and thus died earlier. Both of his parents may have early stage HCM...unless they are seen by a cardiologist that is still a possibility.
I agree with Patti that if you introduced yourself well in your initial email to the second breeder, there may have been less questions for her to ask. I still ask for a questionnaire to be filled out, but find within a few emails with the right home I know they are a good fit...

Well, he did last 6 years and she is giving a substantial discount. She had a 1 year guarantee on him against genetic related issues. But let's face it guys, if you've had a kitten for 6 months and it comes down with a health issue, are you really going to RETURN a kitten you love for a new one?
She did say that she removed the Bengals from her breeding program altogether. Sounds to me like she made a correction for a problem but doesn't want to divulge details because she doesn't want trouble.
