Hello from Canada!

This week has been so discouraging!! I have been receiving a lot of criticism from people about getting a Savannah, and even getting a cat. For most people it's the cost, and for others it's the fact that there are many cats and kittens that are abandoned and need a home, and some people think it's too long of an investment. I wish more people could join the excitement and hype with me, instead of rain on my parade.

On top of that my taxes were messed up this year, and instead of getting a tax refund... I owe them money!! I was hoping some of the refund could go towards a kitten


But silver linings....

I've been promoted to manager! I begin my training at the end of March!! To celebrate I bought a new cat toy

No offense, but you are clearly hanging out with the wrong crowd! You to spend more time here with the rest of the Savannah addicts Congratulations on your new position - and I hope you soon find the kitten of your dreams!!

When I got my savannah, Sterling, I got all kinds of criticism about buying a "designer cat". A lot of people I know are very anti-breeder, and aggressively pro-rescue. If you want a savannah, and you've done the research, and you are confident in your decision, than that's all the reason you need. People will always be more than willing to tell you their opinion, but that shouldn't change, or make you feel bad about yours.
Just because there are cats that have been abandoned, doesn't mean people should only adopt rescue cats. That's the same logic as feeling bad for not finishing your dinner because there are starving people in other parts of the world.
As for cost, that's not really anyone's business other than yours. And investment? As in time? Why wouldn't you want an amazing companion for the next 15+ years?
People may be raining on your parade, but I know for a fact everyone on this site won't. It's a fantastic community When you do pick out your new baby, make sure to post lots of pictures!

I received similar criticism from a close friend, initially. I also have acquaintances who insist their pets are "rescue" animals...even though they purchased said pets...puppies of specific mixes and with a specific look they wanted and waited for...from out of a box or cage in the back of a van at the local Walmart or from Craigslist and paid a few to several hundred dollars. When I point out they actually purchased their shitz-poo or Datsun (lol) from a "breeder" and thus are NOT rescues at all...they indignantly insist they are...sigh.

We can thank our friendly HSUS and others for this way of thinking...

I'll make it my mission to be on here more often haha. This site and it's members are so amazing! Just reading about the stories of the Savannah's makes me excited for the day I'll bring my own Savannah home.

If you want a savannah, and you've done the research, and you are confident in your decision, then that's all the reason you need.

And investment? As in time? Why wouldn't you want an amazing companion for the next 15+ years?

I know! This is the one argument I don't get the most! What should I be hoping for? A cat I get attached to but it passes away a few years later? No. I would be hoping that by some strange miracle it lived on forever and I'd never have to have to deal with missing a friend. I think these kind of people are the ones that get bored of their cats and give them away... only to get a new kitten a few months later and the cycle repeats.

(P.S. When I get a kitten I will be posting so many pictures that it will crash the server )

Well it sounds like you have the right attitude And you've found the right place to talk about all things savannah!
I also live in Canada, what province are you in? I've heard sooo many good things about Exotic Tails, but I know Wildstreaks is really well run and has some gorgeous cats, they are in Vancouver. I personally went local, so I could go see the prospective kittens, and the parents.

I'm in Ontario, and Exotic Tails is only an hour or so's drive, and I'm hoping sometime in the future I can visit the cattery. I looked at some catteries in Quebec that seem good too, but the distance... With Wildstreaks it's the same thing; distance. I know distance shouldn't be a major deciding factor as there are lots of other important ones when choosing a cattery, but when it's local like you said, you can go and see for yourself.

Oh exactly. If you're in Ontario I would definitely check out Exotic Tails. I have looked at their kitties too, I would looove one of her F2s but distance... Plus shipping with Canadian airlines is.. meh.. I did it once, Montreal to Victoria, the poor thing was so upset when I picked her up, she had soiled herself It's not something I'd like to do again.

Awww poor wee thing! I think I would be way to anxious to wait any longer to pick up a kitten! And nervous too about their plane ride. A car ride home where I can be with the kitten sounds so much better!

Yes I would prefer a car ride as well. I live on Vancouver island though, so almost all car rides would also involve a boat ride as well.
