We also have a breeder directory here, so that would be a good place to start.

I would no longer recommend A1 Savannahs, even though my Zuri came from there. They have been sold and the new owners know nothing about the cats they are breeding...I know this first hand because I spoke to them. So until and unless they learn about savannahs, I would not buy from them. Martin and Kathrin no longer own A1 Savannahs.

The advice on here has been spot on and I would follow it closely. I had my first savannah for two years before purchasing my female and then did not breed for another 1.5 years. Good luck!

Um, please, please, please-- do not buy a kitten to jump into breeding just because the breeder is all over the internet. PLEASE ensure that breeder can assist you for the lifetime of your breeder cats. Do you really want to drop an amazing amount of cash, only to be left out in the cold without knowledge and someone to hold your hand through the thick and the thin? And let me tell you- there is more of that in breeding than happy, easy days. Boy oh boy.

Advertising is just that-- a slick facade. Any breeder you are interested in purchasing from, email them personally and chat them up. Spend some time with a few different breeders and that will help a lot (time via email or phone calls or even cat shows!)

Good luck and welcome!

Welcome Seraina!

I understand being so fascinated by the breed you think you might want to breed... after all, most of us breeders on this forum started as pet owners that got sucked into it ;-) But most of us also know that breeding is way more complicated and heartbreaking than we had thought going in... and wish that someone had taken the time to caution us first! When I got my first female (after almost 2 years of owning a pet SV) nobody told me that stud service wasn't an option. Having come from a family that bred horses and dogs I did have that assumption... and really it is not very available. It's a more complicated situation with cats, more risks etc..

if you DO decide to breed, think twice about just going with the breeder that has the slickest website and the most kittens available. If you want to be mentored, those large-scale breeders will likely just not have the time to spend with you answering all your questions. The advantage of the larger-scale breeders is the immediate gratification of kittens being available practically any time of the year, but if you are wanting a companion for the next 20 years, waiting a few months or so for the right kitten from a breeder you respect and trust might be worth it. As others have suggested, going to a cat show is a good thing...where you are located, I believe Debbie of Columbia Breeze has been taking a kitten or two to show so a good way to meet and talk. And also compare to other breeds you will see at that show.

I heard they just changed owners, I wonder if they will remain a popular breeder?

I think it is the fourth owner of the cattery, so I'm not sure how much effect it will have changing owners. What I perceive as the main appeal of the large scale catteries is the availability of kittens at all times... so likely if they continue having many kittens year round then there will be a market.

Thank you everyone for the great advice, particularly about breeding. Sounds like there's a bit more involved than I thought, which is exactly why I mentioned it! It's still something that I want to do at some point, but I may end up getting a Savannah as a pet first. That way I'll have more time to get used to the breed and set up a better space for breeding. We'll see. But don't worry, I won't just be choosing the prettiest website! I'm hoping to meet some of the breeders in the area and get to know them so I would have a mentor during the whole process. I'm mostly just waiting until the crazy holiday rush is over to get in touch with people.

I had found a cat show going on in WA in February, and am definitely planning on attending. In the meantime, I'll probably just stalk the threads here :)

I can't imagine having a half dozen Savannah kittens on the loose, I must admit you breeders must have your hands full, summer 2011 we got our 2 F3 kittens and they were a handful ,still are.

I'm afraid to say there are rarely any Savannahs shown in the WA shows, although I do have a boy now living in WA that @ Alicia his owner has shown in the past, and I know Debbie of Columbia Breeze (OR) has come up to WA in the past to show. Your best bet would be to email the entry clerk a week or so before the show and ask if there are any Savannahs entered. If you are looking at the Ferndale show in February the entry clerk is Jan and you can email her at: entryclerk@evergreencatfanciers.org

Yes indeed, I will be at the Ferndale show! :) Azize was a big hit at the annual TICA show, he has a fantastic show personality!

That's fantastic @Alicia!! I wasn't sure if you were going to show him again... as I recall you mentioned that he was becoming a little pudgy at one point, although I thought he looked pretty darned good in the video you just posted on FB
