"Am I just screwed and I just have to let the cat have the counters? Or is there something else that I can try? I already let her have the kitchen table. Its totally bare now too. I just wipe it down before we use it."

Uh.... you kind of summed it up in first sentence of the last paragraph. :) We just rinse everything and wipe down all before cooking/eating. I have yet to have a cat respect a "no counter" limit. Good luck... :)

Be aware that you can train them to stay off the counters when you are in the same room but they WILL jump up there when you are not there!

What I do is make sure they have somewhere to perch that gives them a good view of what I am doing, in our new kitchen you can see at the end of the center island there is a cat tree. Once the kitchen was finished we started firmly saying "off" when they were jumping onto the island and picking them up and putting onto the cat tree. If they were perching on the cat tree on their own I'd make special mention of it by going over and petting them and telling them what a good cat they were. Now if they step from the cat tree to bench I quietly push them off the edge. They know they are not allowed there now. But now when I am cooking they will cluster on the tree and watch from there.

Some kitties are definitely more persistent than others, but if you calmly do it over and over they get it. They're smart kitties!

She is lying to you all! The beautiful counters are for the cats. She prepares food on the cat tree! LOL

It is a good idea if you have the space. I have one F7 that is so bad, we just have to lock her in the bathroom.

I asked, and they were all in support of preparing cat food on the counters, they would stay off, or at least not come between me and the food unless they were very hungry or needed a snack or thought maybe one of the others was going to...
I didn't win that one, did I?

In all the years I've had cats, I've never had problems keeping them off the counters--at least while I'm home (no delusions that they weren't there while I was at work lol). Enter Duma and all of that is gone. Of course if I catch him up there and say "four feet on the floor!" he jumps down and acts apologetic, but that doesn't stop him from doing it again 10 minutes later. The scat mats just sit there on the counters and he goes around them.

Why did one of mine just cross the keyboard and accidentally hit a "like" on this one?

I gave up on that idea a long time ago...now just wipe the counters down...
I'm with you, Paige. I've completely given up with Shyla on the counters.....nothing works. She will jump off when I yell at her, but any time the kitchen faucet gets turned on.....she's right back up there.....lol My other cat never goes on the counters; so yeah I just keep the counters clean...;)

I was lucky. My 1 y.o. F2 Cassy doesn't like to be sprayed, so now, just the sight of the spray bottle is usually enough to keep her off the counters. However, as stated above, there is often evidence that cassy has been snooping on the counters when we aren't around or at night. Our 4 y.o. F5 Molly isn't even remotely intersted in getting up on anything high except her cat tower/condo.

After I broke simba's habit of jumping on the counters I would test him by putting his favorite toy on the counter when I go to work or go to sleep and it's still there. Also he had a bad habit of putting the sink spunge in his water dish. Everytime I would forget to put in in the cabinet it would end up in his water dish. Now I leave it out no problem.

My Molly frequently pulls socks out of the dirty laundry and puts them in her water bowl....
