How do I keep her off the counters!

"If it flies, it dies"

Lol!!! That sums up my house to a "T", Per!!! I can't tell you how many times I've had to clean kibble up off the floor b/c Karma was chasing a fly... It's like NOTHING else exists in the world but that fly. She also will, immediately upon seeing a water dish, tip it over... b/c there's no reason to have a water dish when there's running water, right?!?! The first 2 Bengals I owned would ONLY drink running water out of a faucet, but not a fountain...

Lmao!!! Karma just reminded me what this thread was initially about (by sitting and talking to me in front of the screen)... I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't keep their SVs off the counters... That seems to be kind of the "rule of thumb" with these wonderful animals!!!

Just remove the cabinets;>) This is the advice I give when asked by new owners!LOL Otherwise you will spend enough money on other products( that are advertised as fool proof ways to keep them off) to pay someone to follow them around and wipe each time they jump on them;>) LOL

When our two Bengals started getting up on the counters I tried to do the stern NO and remove them from the counters. Got to the point that just me closing the foot part of recliner or just standing up and feet hitting the floor you would hear them jump down and walk to you like they were totally innocent. But really didn't keep them off. So basically I gave up and cleared everything off the counters and we implemented the no dishes left in the sink rule. I figure it was a win/win. They still get to be up on counters while I didn't have to hear or clean up things being knocked over or broken. lol But I am having to buy more cleaning products as I'm a bit of a clean freak before preparing food. hehe

My 17wo F2 Sabrina has started walking the counters in our kitchen. She can't jump up there directly yet, but she has the moves to get there by other means. I've cleared off everything that I possibly can to make the area less interesting (my 10' long bar is absolutely bare now), but that just means that the most interesting thing to investigate is the sink of clean dishes!

I've tried using a squirt bottle on her. That worked. At first. Now I think that she thinks its a game. She'll run around back and forth until she is pretty much soaked and then leap off the counter like a flying squirrel (that does look pretty funny). She'll hop onto the bar stools and pop her head up and down and wait to be squirted moving randomly among the three chairs (kinda like whack a mole).

Obviously just ignoring her up there won't work because I know that she gets up there when we're not around (by evidence in the sink). I think if she thought it was only game fodder, she wouldn't get up there when we aren't there.

And: yes, she has other vertical spaces -- most higher than the counters. And, like I said, the only interesting things up there now are the freakin' sinks. I can't exactly remove those.

Am I just screwed and I just have to let the cat have the counters? Or is there something else that I can try? I already let her have the kitchen table. Its totally bare now too. I just wipe it down before we use it.

In my expert opinion, you are fighting a losing battle. Cats love high places and everything is fair game to them. They are naturally jumpers and look for places to go up on. They are super smart, but really don't consider the difference between getting up on an armoire versus your kitchen counter. Curtailing jumping activity in a cat is an exercise in futility...so my recommendation is to get some good kitchen disinfectant and wipe down the counters prior to cooking. The "messing around" with things in your sink is also not unusual. Savannahs bore easily and are always looking for new things to get into. it does not matter how many toys or cat tress you provide... Over here they could care less about ANYTHING that is made for them and cat proof...they prefer to turn the entire home into their personal playground, and there is little that can be done about it unless you can police their every move 24/7, which is totally not practical. Better to cat proof your home to the best of your ability and to your best to live with them in peace.

I gave up on that a long time ago! I just make sure they are cleaned good before any cooking ;)
