Jengo gets neutered tomorrow, I called the vet to see what type of anesthetic they will use and they said they are using isoflorane. I'm so NEW to the SV cat game - I'm new to having a pet and am probably going to go way overboard to make sure that he's being treated like a king. I feel better knowing that he won't be on ketamine of there is the slightest chance it could be hurtful or dangerous.
I am sure your little fellow will be fine :)

But several instances should not dictate what an entire population of pet owners and breeders do...and who knows...maybe the dosage was off or something else happened. I'm not saying there cannot be adverse effects with ketamine, I just have not seen anything scientific or any kind of research that would or rationale that would lead me to believe that all savannahs should not have ketamine. Just does not make sense to me.

Called "panic mentality." I agree Paige. I know Australian shepherd's can have a genetic mutation that prevents them from metabolizing certain drugs and set them up for a lethal situation but it is a specif gene which can even be verified by testing. I don't know of anything in the Savannah that is consistent with the Ketamine scare. I think if there were an true issue, it would be really obvious by now as it would be a well known fact within the breed. It is not like Savannahs are as rare as they used to be. It may be an excuse for a bad vet? "Oh, he may have had a reaction to the ketamime"- more like the cat was left unattended until his breathing slowed and he died of CO2 toxicity. Sorry call me the skeptic.

My vet used to teach at Davis. She said once that she shuddered at the thought that some of the vet students who would be practicing out in the field- they were either sloppy or just didn't care.
