We don't spray for anything. Heck, I don't even use Round Up except in the most extreme situations (like getting rid of invasive Wisteria several years back).
The only thing that does happen in May is that our deadline for brush clearance is May 1st. We have 2/3 of an acre that is covered in brush and hay. We have made a lot of inroads by manually plucking really annoying weeds like mustard. I know that a lot of people are allergic to mustard but have not seen anything that indicates that cats are. The rest of the hill is predominantly some type of hay, California fuchsia, sage and lavender. The fire department did the inspection last week and as a result, my neighbor was doing their brush clearance last Thursday/Friday.
