The nose alone, is awe inspiring!! And it's called Scotch in those parts. They can get annoyed when you call it whiskey. Whiskey is the stuff on that big green island to the west. And folks on that big green island to the west get annoyed when you spell it whisky. Whisky is the stuff those yankee colonist cousins much farther west make.
RD, they do call it whisky here and are very particular about it. I tried Lagavolin tonight. Verrrry smooth. Also like Laphroig cask. It is a bit more peaty and smoky. That nice gentleman who approached me in a restaurant a few days ago said to add 1 or 2 drops of water to the whisky and let it sit a few minutes to open the flavor. I can't decide which way I like it better so I drink half of it straight and the other half with water. Mind you, you get stink eye if you use more than 2 drops of water. I shudder to think what they do to people who ask for ice. Our hotel has a collection of 120 whiskys here, some costing $300 pounds per bottle. I'll not get through them all in the one day we have left on Skye.

Don't leave that place till ya try the Highlands! Just a tad of smoke if at all, but the body!! And it seems you're finding out about things get better with age! Atta girl, drink it neat! Highland Park, Glenmorangie (nothing less than 15 years!), Dalmore, Balvenie are excellent choices. The highlander locals love Dalwhinnie. You'll thank me later!

RD, Two fine Scott gents talked me into trying the local Talisker. They had a cow when I ordered the 18 yr old for 10 pounds. They were drinking the cheaper stuff.

hmm, for the money, I haven't found anything that much better than a 12 year old Glenlivet, to be worthy of the investment. But heck, what do I know, got started on the whiskey trail, 39 years ago at Wazzu, and it started with Wild Turkey. 
Of course the MacNaughton's in the parents liquor cabinet, could of had some influence too

Dice, try the Glenlivet 21. Yeah it costs a lot. Or, try a highland custom barrel maturation. I find Glenmoragine Quinta Ruben a delight to savor, and it's a reasonable price. Dalmore 12 is the smoothest 12 yo I have ever found.

Glug glug glug is not the sound of me drinking whisky. It is the sound the ground makes when you involuntarily step into a bog.
Dinner is in 30 minutes and we're at a different hotel in Glencoe. Their bar doesn't look too impressive but I remain optimistic. Definitely need something to warm my innards after hiking in rain through bogs and mud.
The Talisker was verra smooooth RD. The distillery on Skye was closed today so we didn't do a tour. Such a pity.
