I have a Mokave Jag. I learned that they are considered "wild" in my area. My vet explained this to me. I researched it and learned that if they are not at least 5 generations removed from the wild, they are considered wild where I live. I live in North Carolina. My Mokave is not at least 5 generations removed. What does this mean? Well, if my cat were to bite someone, it would be MANDATORY TO EUTHANIZE him. This is according to my vet who is also a breeder of cats. The reason for this, is that not enough information is known about how the rabies vaccines effectiveness is in cats with wild blood. IT does not matter that the cat is up to date on his shots. This also means that I can not show the cat at any TICA shows or CFA shows. The breeder of Mokave cats states that you can show them as "domestic household cats".. However, this is considered "misrepresentation" according to an authority that I spoke with personally at TICA. These cats can be fun but mine is multiple personalities and is unpredictable (most cats are, for that matter). but mine can get quite aggressive. Do your homework. Mine also was sick when I got him and has been sick on and off ever since. I love my cat, but I would not purchase another one.

There are registries that do nothing but take money to issue papers...they don't monitor anything, there are no cat shows where cats are evaluated (although I remember one did online cat shows where people submitted pics but it didn't seem to go further than one "show"). They simply issue registration certificates in response to a paid form.

I totally agree about these registries just take your money. The REFR does not have a contact phone number. I have written to them several times to try to get information and they have yet to return my emails. I am not sure if there is any benefit to have a cat registered to their organization, except it just seems like a lot of hype to me. Anyone can start up a registry and call it whatever they want and make you think you are special if you join it. Just my opinion.

The wild TWiG (theoretical wild gene) depends on the generations of the hybrid cats used to create your cat. So if the Bengal (or Savannah or whatever) was four or later generations from the wild ancestor then your cat would be legal in your area and eligible for exhibition in TICA. However, if it is any closer to the wild ancestor then it is indeed illegal where you live and not eligible to show as a HHP
Of course, if it has a quirky personality you probably wouldn't want to show it anyway...

Not sure where you are getting your info from, but since servals are legal in North Carolina, I highly doubt your cat is illegal... Unless you live in one of three counties that ban hybrids thereof

I did not say he is "illegal". I said he is considered "wild". So are Savannah cats where I live. You do not need a permit to have one.. However, if one bites someone, according to the Animal control, it must be euthanized. In ordinary domestic cat bite situations, the cat must be quarantined. However, there is not quarantine period for "hybrid" cats.

She was the one who informed me of this. She stated that she had no problem giving the vaccine, however, it would not be considered valid in North Carolina in the event of any animal bite. She stated that all Savannah cats, regardless of felial generation were considered hybrid also in North Carolina and that North Carolina considers all hybrids to be "wild".

I know that sounds crazy, but this is how the current law is.

Ok. I did not write the manual. This is an actual government document. I wish it were not true but I have crossed referenced it in several legal forums as well as phone calls to animal control.

Again. I did not state they are "illegal". I stated that the vaccine is not recognized. North Carolina considers a "hybrid" any animal that is less than 5 generations removed from wild, period. The laws are available online as well as the definitions. I did not write this. I am simply offering this information that my vet gave to me when she administered the rabies vaccine to my cat. (please scroll to page 6 of the manual listed below)

Hybridlaw.com list the site with state law on hybrids and SV are not regulated by wild life commission in your state.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission does not regulate hybrid wolves or cats in NC. These animals are regulated at the county and municipality level."
