Some of my cats' favorite cheap and/or free toys are plastic wine corks, paper bags, boxes, empty toilet paper tubes, and large crinkly plastic bags (the ones from the Goodwill are the best) with the handles cut, and used with supervision. Of course their favorite toy lately is a roll of toilet paper. This is the first time in 5 years I've had cats shred the TP.

LOL, Pam! You actually gave them a roll of TP? I need to try that when Zuri is in a "mood" ;)

Umm...no, I did not give them the TP! They decided on their own that it made a great toy. I did let them finish destroying that one, though, since they seemed to be having so much fun, and they are spoiled rotten. Now we keep it hidden in a lidded box ;)

It might be worth letting Zuri have a roll to see if it will help!

Ah, ok...looked like you actually gave it to them, which is probably not a bad idea for Zuri ;) Ixas had his first quail today after Zuri had hers, of course...he still has his baby teeth, but managed to eat them all...that kept him happy for a while ;)

We definitely mess around with the boxes, cutting holes in them taping multiples together and lots of little windows big enough for a paw to get through. Doesn't take all that long for them to get shredded, but there are always new ones showing up. :)

Also, I think there can be a lot more to this than just toys although I'm struggling to think of other things we created. When I say we, I actually mean my wife as she has the idea and I provide the labor.

Funny, I mentioned this thread to my wife and asked if she had any feathers around. She revealed 3 pillow case size bags with an assortment of them. I guess my question was somewhat rhetorical, as I knew she had some, just wondering why we buy so many feather wands when we already have the components to make them. None of them ever last a week and we're always struggling to find convenient places to stash them knowing it's only a matter of time before their hunted and destroyed.

I was at the pet store yesterday, and noticed that most of the rope toys (dog section, of course) have been dyed. Do dyes have any adverse affects on SV's ? Some of the ropes didn't have frayed ends...figure those would be less of a hazard.

I don't think the toy companies would be using any dyes or other agents that could be potentially harmful to an animal, but I can't say I know that for sure....

With all the additives and chemical sprays used on food for our consumption, it just made me wonder. You're probably right though; dogs seem to get along just fine with them.
