Happy to report that Shango's recovered good since his post neutering infection (neutered 9 days ago). Thought I'd document the ordeal here, in case it helps anyone in the future not so fortunate to have this happen. I want to say Shango's vet has been nothing but exceptional...and such infections are rare but can happen:
day0: neutered, no Ketamine, no sutures. He weighed 9.4 lbs prior to surgery. Did bleed some drops upon arriving home, about 6 hrs post surgery. Ate pretty well that night, in good spirits. The vet admin'd Buprenorphine as a pain killer and gave me ~6 0.15cc's syringes for the next few days. Tried putting a funnel on, but he tore it off! Did everything to prevent him from licking. He was very loving, way more than usual, probably from the drugs.
day1: pretty lethargic in AM from pain medicine. Still ate well. Gave him 0.15cc Buprenorphine. Neutered area was not swollen or very red. In fact, it looked like it reduced in size and starting to heal that day.
day2: gave him 0.15cc Buprenorphine. more lethargic in AM. Even more lethargic in PM and did not eat all day. He would drink a little. He was becoming more lifeless though. His neutered area was more swollen and red. Weighed in much less, about 8.9 lbs. Took temp: 103.3F. Above 101-102.5 is considered mild fever. Took him into emergency vet that night. Diagnosed with infection and fever. Prescribed 1ml Amoxicillin/12 hrs next 7 days. To be safe, the emergency vet admin'd a subcutaneous fluid pack to his back area. Shango absorbed this very well, no issues. Within 1 hr of the fluid pack, he did show more spirit! Late night that night!
day3: quit giving him Buprenorphine a day early, as it made him quite lethargic so I thought. My vet who neutered him asked to see him. Shango's temp did drop a bit to 102F post Amoxicillin/fluid pack. His neutered area still quite swollen. Vet drained his area, Shango didn't like that but it was good for him
. He also performed swab to determine bacteria type (but this takes 3 days for analysis). We decided best approach was Convenia, a fairly powerful antibiotic administered via injection. It is successful for skin infections such as this neutering infection. It slow releases for 14 days. Also, my vet asked me to apply a warm compress (warm water w/ clean rag) every 8 hrs for next day or so. This helps open up/drain the infection. This worked well and he didn't mind it. I also asked if I could give him syringes of water/chicken broth. Vet agreed good idea and gave me a 12ml syringe. Cat's can drink 10-30ml/day, but I gave him about 10-15ml that day just to help. Not too much or he could vomit from too much water. Shango began to show more life that afternoon. Shango weighed in a 8.6 lbs at his lowest. Lost about 0.8 lbs from where he should be at this time. Doesn't take long when he's not eating!
day4: big turnaround. He slept most of the day as usual, but doing better. His neutering area had become less swollen and red. He began to eat more. I still admin'd maybe two 6ml syringes of water to keep him good and hydrated! No issues. Still giving him his Amoxicillin every day. Noticed his weight began to stabilize and even slowly climb. Starting giving him 3ml of Vitamin B complex to stimulate his appetite. Boy does that work! He began eating raw only 30 min after this, he hadn't ate it since his surgery. Took 1 tablet Vitamin B mixed with about 100ml water, then mixed 0.6ml of this concentrate with 6ml water for 1:10 ratio. He had not problem with this yellow stuff! Vitamin B = good appetite!!!
day5: lots o' energy! Really happy cat!
day8: eating well. Back to 9.4 lbs, his weight prior to neuterig. Post recovery trip to the Vet. Shango's temp is 100F, very normal. All normal, just a slight bit of swolleness still present on one side of his neutered area, but nothing to be concerned with. Should reduce and if not next week, will visit the Vet. The results of the swab had showed 4 types of bacteria including e coli. It's possible he got the infection from pooping or licking or just sitting down.
Lastly, I originally thought the neutering had changed his behavior (day1 or so). Boy was I wrong! Post neutering 9 days later, he has all of his old habits back. Not a lick of behavior change post neutering!!!! Yeh!!!

This is wonderful news..I am so glad to hear Shango is doing much better and still has the same personality you have already grown to love! You were such a good dad to him during his convalescence.....cheers, indeed

This is what I feared was happening when I first posted. First day was fine, then he started licking the wound and nearby areas.
Glad to hear he mended quite well after the antibiotics. Little bit of antibiotics and good as new!

Exactly. I thought the first day he was out of the woods...lesson learned! Pretty sure the infection started in well into the second day even after some healing. He probably just licked it right or got some poop on it, etc. If you think about the location of the neutering surgery, there's a decent chance it could get infected (licking, bathroom, sitting, etc). The antibiotics really helped to heal things up fast though!

I'm so sorry Shango (and you, too) had to go through all that! Coolcat is going to have a cow when he reads it. He's phobic of surgery to begin with...cancelled one of his own an hour before he was due on the table. I don't want Triton to spray all over the house, so if some of you can follow up with any non-incidental neutering reports, it would be very helpful. Otherwise, I fear that Coolcat will change his mind. I'm so happy that Shango is doing better! You were wonderful, Scorpius, but that's what great dad's do! He's lucky to have you!
Shangos issues are very unusual...ixas was neutered with no problem at all as are millions of other male cats.
The outcome of not neutering for Triton will not be a pleasant one and most breeders have a clause in their contacts as far as neutering, meaning you must have your cat neutered within a certain timeframe.

I am so glad Shango is better! I have to tell you I have adored Shango since I joined this site, something about that little face and his antics lining up with what my Nyah does. So when this happened, I must have looked upset because my husband asked me what was wrong and I replied "Shango is sick!" He told me I had crossed the line into online stalker territory, kiddingly, of course, but not really getting why I cared about a cat I never met. I pointed out that I didn't need to explain who Shango was to him, he already knew, so I might not be so alone in my stalking!
