Neutering

My boys were neutered when I adopted them. However, I can tell you that after dental cleaning for the next 24-36 hours they are as high as kites. Headbutts are headslams into my hand or leg, flopping down for belly rubs are flopping over, crawling along on the carpet making 360's and super purrs. Oh so clumsy too, they walk like they are a wee bit tipsy. I was the best friend on the receiving end of the I love you man's as if I were escorting them from the bar.

Every cat is different and the go home paperwork are guidelines, you know best. I think you are doing the right thing and taking it slow. Let us know how it goes!

If he is not passing urine or pooping ...I would be very concerned.

Thanks for all of the feedback and comparison experiences. Tonight, took Shango into the emergency 24/7 Vet, as he was running a bit of a fever and of course has been so lethargic post neutering (only since last night though). It's been 2.5 days since the neutering now. The Vet measured a 102.5F temp, a bit high. His surgery area was a bit more chaffed than before, possibly from the car ride to the Vet (and I'm sure his previous lickings have not been so helpful). To be safe, Vet applied a hydration pack (back of neck/back area) and I noticed he perked up some after this. Next, I'm now giving him Amoxicillin. Got him in a cone to prevent licking, although he hates it! He hasn't ate anything for about 24 hrs now, so will be cooking up some favorite chicken fillets and see if he eats some tonight. But feel better getting him more hydrated. Yep, I'm not doing any more of the Buprenorphine as well. Hopefully better things to report tomorrow! dj

Thanks all... May take him back into the Vet who neutered him 3 days ago for a check up. He did eat a small portion of cooked chicken last night...but nothing to drink so I did 0.5cc of water via syringe this AM (I'm overly paranoid about dehydration). Basically no appetite though. His energy level is about the same, he'll run and play a little, but not much. No vocalization yet either. He wants to clean his neutered area, but I prevent him from doing so. Still not yet the same old Shango... dj

Yeh, I'm going to ditch the last recommended doses of Buprenorphine (the morphine like drug), there were 2 more doses going into tomorrow. The last dose he got was this morning. He's already down 9 oz since the neutering 2 days ago and today much more lethargic since yesterday. He hasn't ate a thing today as far as I can tell. I have given him some water so he doesn't dehydrate. I don't know if it's the morphine, but yeh it's worth ditching to see if he improves.

This is what I had for Nyah after her spay and it does make them very sleepy and not interested in food. I am willing to bet once he is off the drugs, he will be eating with a vengeance and bouncing around like no tomorrow.

If Shango were mine, I'd take him to the vet who did his surgery, asap. It can't hurt to do that, if only for your peace of mind (and ours) that he is still recovering as he should....at least call that office and describe how his actions have been since the neuter.
