Chirps & Massive Headbutts
Shango got neutered yesterday (@22 weeks, 9 lbs). No Ketamine, bill was $200 (which seemed reasonable to me being I requested no Ketamine). Happy with my Vet, who also works on big cats, but I will say in general neutering is a bit more invasive than I thought by reading many of the posts here. I thought I'd document a few details before I forget.
Medicine - applying 0.15cc Buprenorphine every 12 hrs along Shango's gums for the next 2 days or so. This is a pain reliever, about 30x stronger than morphine but safe for cats so I've read.
Precautions - just removing his cat tree for a few days to be safe (he likes the highest rooftop portion which he needs to jump up to). In general, not playing with him and attempting to lure him in to resting for the next few days.
Neutering - Stopped food/water midnight before the procedure. My Vet administered a sedative and I was able to hold him until he got relaxed prior to the surgery. The neutering was quick, maybe 10-15 min.
0-6 hrs - Shango remained at the Vet under their supervision.
6-12 hrs - Shango at home. He did bleed some at home from his surgery, some drops of blood on the floor. I applied a little gauze and pressure and no issues. This isn't uncommon I'm told, since the surgery was not sutured. Sutering I am told just irritates things more. So he had a decent brown scab down there
. He was quite droggy during this timeframe. He walked ok, but would also do a few backwards walks. I think this is from loosing his gait from the surgery down there. No meowing or barking during this timeframe. His right eye was not quite as open as the left eye, I think from the medicines. He did begin eating raw chicken that night. I also gave him 0.5cc of water via a syringe just to keep him more hydrated (me playing doctor here). Bought a surgery inner tube for his neck, but he didn't take it very well so didn't use it.
12-24 hrs - Shango at home. No more bleeding, maybe a spot or two, but that was about it. He had licked his surgery incision and scab/blood along his tail clean overnight. The surgery incision looked fine though, no swelling and really not that large. He slept good last night and began his normal 3am toe biting. Then by 6am, he was barking as normal, even a small Serval dance. He ate quite a bit too. Walking and running good, just one small backwards walk this morning. He is much more loving this morning, headbutts galore that I haven't had since maybe 2 months ago (he hadn't done these since I first got him).
