Hi, I'm new here too! I currently have a ragdoll named Dante and am doing a search for my very first Savannah, thanks to Kronos and Alisha!

Any hints and pointers on finding or checking out good breeders and how to select a good kitty would be highly welcome. I'm really nervous about finding a kitty that is just right for me and my raggie Dante.

Cecilia :)

Hi Cecelia- first, love your name- it was my Grandma's :) I so wanted to name a little girl after her! Sigh!

As for choosing a good Savannah breeder, I think we are blessed with a lot of good breeders so far (knock on wood). You really want to find a breeder that will answer your questions, listen to you and who isn't just interested in the hard sell when it comes to getting a Savannah. The first thing I would suggest is deciding WHAT you want- what generation, what sex, what coloring you want (or what you DON'T want- ie maybe you don't want an F-F2, you don't want a nonstandard coloring etc) and that will help you narrow down your search for a good breeder. Personally FOR ME- I am only interested in getting cats from people who are serious about progressing this breed. To me- that is essential to a good breeder.

Hi Trish!

I think my problem is that my desires are a little vague...that is, I'm looking for personality rather than looks, although looks do play a part of personality. I want a kitty that will be my best friend, head butt me (you may have to remind me some day that I said that lol), sleep with me, bond with me...and my ragdoll, too. I want a kitty that's a sweety, maybe a little more laid back than the average Savannah, but not disinterested, and a little "tribal." Oh, and a bushy tail. The tail is where it's at when it comes to looks. After the tail, it's a matter of getting as close to breed standard as possible (and a smiley face!) without breaking the bank ;)

But what I find is that the breeders think all of the kitties' personalities are special, so it's difficult to figure out which personality is the right one. And really, how do you tell the true personality of a 2-3 month old kitten, anyway?

I guess if I had to put together a wish list, I'd say #1 a bushy tail, #2 F4 or lower (with the hope that produces a less aggressive or crazeee personality), #3 I prefer the ones that have slightly bengal-type heads, you know a little rounder with ears with the hair that comes to the tip, and #4 the lighter colors with the darker spots. I also love the hooded eyes, so maybe that's #1.5. But a;; of those are negotiable in terms of personality :D

I have a funny feeling that this search for the perfect kitty is going to take me on an adventure...a trek across the US, and maybe further lol

Cecilia :)

Forgot to mention that I looove the long fingers that look like they could pick up a pencil and start writing a story at any minute.

Hi Cecilia,

Welcome! Glad to have you here....have you checked out the thread we have here: http://www.savannahcatchat.com/forums/purchasing-a-savannah-cat.39/ on purchasing a savannah?

I chose an F6 SBT as my first savannah and an F4 SBT was my second and she will be bred to an F7 SBT, so her kittens will be F5 SBT's...we also have more info here: http://www.savannahcatchat.com/forums/savannah-cat-faq.42/ - we have some of the best breeders as moderators and members on this forum and you can find out more about them by going to our breeder directory. Since we are only 3 weeks old, our breeder directory is not yet very large, but is getting there...

feel free to ask questions, pick everyone's brains and peruse the form, which is full of info on savannah cats.

Cecilia.......you will know when the right kitten comes along. When you see it........it will call your name. You will lay awake thinking about the picture. You will go back and look again and again. You will wake up thinking about it...you will go to bed thinking about it. Be patient and listen for that call;>) LOL

Exactly, Shelby! This is what I tell people when they make an inquiry about my kittens or Savannahs in general.

And that your heart may skip a beat when you see "the one"......:)

I was to the point of losing sleep when I saw Rumor. NS as she is....I had to have her. I was a pitiful mess until I was sure she was going to be mine. She is a healthy, sweet, Servaline spotted baby and much loved here. Her babies have brought great joy to their new owners and ME!LOL I wish I had more like her;>)

I suppose I should just buy an "around the world" plane ticket and stop at every Savannah Cattery and peer at all the babies? ;)

I know what you all mean, I am looking for "the one" but how do you do it, find pictures or how to meet the kits without going insane?

Edit: I think this is the big question...how do you do it? It's not a matter of finding just a single breeder? There are a lot of breeders out there, a lot of kitties, so how do you find the right one? I've already got my mailbox filled with tons of pictures...not that I'm complaining lol
