New kitten! I think she is a black smoke.

If there is silver behind the mom, then get the breeder to examine her more closely. Sometimes what seems solid black is just a "poorly developed" black smoke. The base of the hairs in the case of a black cat will be brownish while for a smoke they will be white.

The father is definitely seal lynxpoint, but he could be silver seal lynxpoint.... and it can be hard to determine the difference...

Yes colour genetics are really interesting, I've been reading everything I can find haha. The breeder agreed it's a little early to tell. So we're just going to wait and see I guess. I'll ask her to look at the mom more. I'll post more pictures of my girl as she gets older. I'm excited to see how she turns out, regardless of her colour. Thanks for all the feedback! On a side note, we'll be naming her Freya, after the Norse goddess of war and beauty :)

Well if you love her whether she turns out solid black or a black smoke, it will just be curiosity to see what she ends up :)

Leroy-Nov04.jpg wet-leroy-mar9.jpg This is the only smoke (or silver) I've had here... as you can see he was a very very dark one, but when wet you could really see the white at the base of the hair! Other smokes are much more developed and closer to looking like dark silver spotted tabbies...so there can be huge variation.

Yes absolutely, I picked her for her personality, whatever her looks turn out to be is just a nice bonus. Plus it will fun to watch her mature into her colour. That's really neat to see your boy, he looks very black but you can see the white underneath. Really cool. The amount of variation is other very interesting.

Freya is adorable :) She does appear in the pics to be a smoke. It will be interesting to see if the mom is as well, but I agree with you that color is not important as long as she is the one you fell in love with, is healthy and well-socialized.

Congratulations!

Rafiki's brother is a mel but he looked chocolate brown until almost 12 weeks of age. I really, really wanted them both!

So unless the sire happens to be a silver seal lynxpoint (as opposed to just seal lynxpoint), your kitten will end up mel too... and conversely, if your kitten grows up and is most definitely a smoke then the sire must be silver seal lynxpoint! LOL!

My Kovu is a smoke, but like the picture Bridgette showed, he is very dark. If you look at the base of his fur, though, it is very white and some of the silver shows through on his neck. His spots are a bit easier to see than on a Mel but the still don't photograph strongly. image.jpg image.jpg
