He's doing great Scott. You are both lucky to have each other. I got a kick out of finding baby teeth. When mine were teething, they loved chicken legs. They used to rub the bone on their gums when they were done eating the meat. I suppose it served as a teething ring.

Thank you Paige, Shelby, Deborah and Patti, I feel like I'm the lucky one to have such a great little buddy! But he just might be a little spoiled ;) lol We do keep each other very happy and he and my other cat Chloe have now become very close friends as well, they've even gotten to the point where they are starting to groom each other :) it's great to see her acting like a kitten again because Shelby brings the inner kitten out of the 10 year old girl. It was funny because she didn't know how to play since she's been an only cat for so long. She'd want to play and just emulate him, but she was so much more powerful than him and didn't know how to hold back, that she'd just smack him around. He never whined about it or anything and went back for more, but Chloe clearly had the upper hand. Now he's gotten stronger and she's learned how to pull back a little. They play non-stop chasing each other through the house and stopping and rolling around on the ground playing, sneaking up on each other, it's hilarious and I can tell Chloe is now probably the happiest she's been in a long time now that she has a playmate.

Deborah, do you mind telling me, do you just take a raw frozen chicken leg, thaw it, rinse it and give it to them? Or can I give it to him still frozen like a frozen treat? Can I just go buy some mini-drumsticks like the ones often used to mix in when making Hot-wings? I feed Shelby raw about every third day, sometimes more, sometimes less, but I'm using Primal frozen Raw, so it's pre-made rectangles, I just take one out and put it in a sandwich bag and in the refrigerator the night before and then it's ready to eat the next day. But I think you may be right, now that he's teething, he may love to chew some drumsticks up. I just want to make sure he doesn't get salmonella poisoning, so I want to know the cleanest most hygienic way to go about it if you don't mind explaining. Thanks!

If you give a cat a frozen drumstick, most likely they won't recognize it as food...it won't SMELL like food. Once it thaws out then it will smell like meat and they might then show interest :)

You can use the "mini-drumsticks" which are basically bits of chicken wings... and for a smaller cat or kitten then that may be all they want. Just try and see.

I've fed raw meat to my cats for over 10 years now, and have never rinsed drumsticks. Cats are simply not as susceptible to Salmonella as we are, all animal species have different susceptibilities to different bacteria... and a strict carnivore's digestive system is short and quick, not giving those bacteria so much time to do evil. My rule of thumb is if the meat (of any sort) does not smell good enough for me to cook and eat myself, then I won't feed it to my cats.

Brigitte beat me to the punch and her answer is spot on. I do think it's a good idea to give him something to chew for teething. Mine would most often spit out a tooth after gnawing on their chicken or quail. I wish I would have made a video of Maliik especially. He would roll that bone on his gums with his eyes half closed and he looked as though he were thinking "ohhhh, yeah, that feels so gooood."

Congrats on your new Savannah!. I've just read this post. My savannah kittens were clumsy for about 15 months or so. They leap and climb and give me concern about their athletic antics. All those stories about climbing / jumping on top of doors and anything possible are true. The 2 year old (Mayhem) found a way to jump up to the 1.5 inch top of the mirror on dresser drawers. He is also seriously studying the ceiling fan when it is off. They have never seemed to grow out of the hell bent rough and tumble play. They still crash into stuff, break things (Had to take all breakable things off the fireplace mantle.), and generally seem to lose their composure at times. I call them Savannah moments! I can predict these times by the look in their eyes.
So, my question becomes, about how long before you pick up another SV?
