It's probably the adhesive that smells and not the carpeting. Spraying it down with anything is only going to prolong the process of it completely drying and curing. If there is a warmer part of your home you can move it too that might speed things up.

Vinegar fades out super fast, Jaqui. The smell won't stick around for long- particularly if you put your fans on it as well.

Okay, I got a new cat tree for my upstairs office/cat room/guest room. The new carpet on it has this godawful chemical smell that is making my whole house stink, and frankly is making me a bit ill. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can spray on it to get rid of that terrible odor?

Something like a little green machine to steam clean it might help get rid of the smells...but if it is the adhesives it just might take air and time... leave the windows open (shut the cats out) and hope it dissipates fast? Ugh!

It's most definitely the adhesive used to glue down the sisal. The carpet parts don't smell at all.
