It's most definitely the adhesive used to glue down the sisal. The carpet parts don't smell at all.

Does it still reek? Blech.

IF its the adhesive then you'll most likely just have to wait it out, but fans may help. There is a product called Ozium that I have used before that really does suck the smell out of the air. The green winterfresh type one doesnt smell bad but i believe there is also a scentless one. You should be able to find it in a drugstore or grocery store. The ozium scent lingers for maybe a half hour or so but is gone after.

I was told by the place i bought the tree from that the builder doesn't use any chemicals, which means that the sisal he buys is coated in some kind of nastiness. Today i mixed up my hydrogen peroxide/baking soda odor remover and sprayed it on. OMG! What a difference! i can put my nose right on the posts and not smell it. It remains to be seen whether the smell stays gone after they dry.

I called the place I bought it from and they came and hauled outside to the carport. I'll see how it smells after a few days outside.
