Yup. There was some real convoluted software created for those missions. They had to with the VERY limited memory available.

Exponentially more computing power in your smart phone than what NASA had around for the Apollo 11 mission actually. The real genius however was the software NASA was writing at the time when memory, storage and processing power were at such a premium. What NASA had eventually developed for the Apollo Guidance Computer, the design ended up being so complex that had they been aware how tall an order it was they likely would have never attempted it.

Also keep in mind that the first lunar lander had a computer glitch that set off an alarm because it was being over taxed because they forgot to shut off a system before the approach.

Yep, it was non-preemptive multitasking. They could run more than a half dozen things at a time, but they really had to turn things off that weren't being used. Also keep in mind that it was nothing like we have today with a display or even text, just a computer attached to a bunch of lighted buttons and switches.

I remember. Assembly language... IF THAT. LOL

Yeah.. I think you are right... I remember in school (many many many years ago) in electronics one of our projects was to build a CPU. We programmed it in Assembly. When you would power it up it had 6 7-Segment LED's that would read "CPU-UP" and then you could work with it and it had 2K of RAM... One guy reprogrammed his to say "UP-CPU". I still had my process up until I moved to where I am at now, but somehow got lost in the move. It was built on a bread board with twisted wire vs soldering and PC boards.

Oh Yeah.... The Good Old Days...

But don't for get one of the oldest and most famous computers that did not use chips, tubes, or memory... It was a mechanical computer known as the "Norden Bomb Site":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombsight - Coming up on Memorial Day with this computer we owe a lot of thanks to all of our Military Men that used the tools given to them, and made our great country what it is today.

To Demon Dino: It's best to not be quite so blatant...laughing at your servants will lead to cranky and disobedient servants.
