Question for SV breeders

Unfortunately, on the flip side, I didn't even consider the first breeder I talked to because she refused to let me see her cats. I can now understand the why behind her choice, but it was pretty off-putting to hear "sorry, you don't get to visit." Doing such gives me no opportunity to understand what personality I'm getting in a kitten.

Footnote: I didn't get to see Nitro's breeder's place, either, but I did learn enough to believe I was getting a well-socialized kitten.

I allow visitors. My house isn't very sexy, but I like people to see cats that are enjoying themselves in the sun, playing and interacting together vs. the "cage" style breeder, the kittens friendly, and their moms as well.

If i have time, I don't mind a perspective buyer just looking. It depends on how busy I am. If a buyer drives 2 to 3 hours to visit cats, I can spend the bit of time with them. It helps me get to know them and find out the sort of person my babies are going to.

It has also helped me decide which people are definitely not going to get one.

As there are a few SV breeders local, I do want to know if they are "cattery-hopping". That I don't go for. I don't need anyone elses' parasites or URIs here!

Kelley let me come and see Simba before I put a deposit down. She was very friendly and answered all my questions before during and after my purchase.

That's nice, but I just do not want to chance something being brought into my house and affecting all of my kittens and cats...I think it is a big risk to take and I am not willing to take it. There are far too many communicable diseases to risk exposure...remember that as a breeder, I am raising someone else's future pet and/or queen/stud and I take that responsibility very seriously.

Once a deposit is made and all vaccines given, then my kitten buyers can come and visit and pick up their kittens. I have not lost any sales because of this - people understand...I send very frequent updates, as you can see by my postings here...

I'm with Paige. My cattery is in my house and I work full time. My weekends are full. If you want to put a deposit down on a kitten, then you can come and see it. I used to let people come over to just look and it took alot of time. My husband travels alot also so when he is home, I spend the time with him.

I agree Nitro... I learned about SVs from the Animal Planet and was interested. I REALLY wanted to get to know the breed better, but reading and YouTube just wasn't enough for me. I was a potential parent, but when I contacted 2 local breeders, they said no visiting allowed. So 3 weeks later, my family and I were in Del Mar, California, at the Savannah Cat Shop. It was the only place where we didn't have to make an appointment or ask permission to go see the breed. That's where I received my Savannah 101. We made that trip specifically to see the breed. I feel kinda bad for not adopting from her, but she was way too expensive.

I can see the breeders point of view with communicable diseases and strangers, but everyone you guys adopt a SV to will be a stranger. It may give you the chance to see the perspective parents before the day of pick up to see if they will be adequate parents. I don't hate you guys because of it, it's your own personal dwelling.. I have a habit of answering the door with a shotgun in hand...

Its just something to think about the next time someone asks to come and get to know the breed better.

You can meet the customers in person and think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and they can end up being the worst cat parents around. You just have to hope that your baby is going to a good home.

Ms. Kelly Sheppard, Thank you..

If a breeder does his/her homework, it won't be an issue...I know exactly who my kittens are going to...and the situation in which they will be living.

Quite honestly, my kittens and cats are more important to me than someone wanting to come to my house and "see" them...go to the SV Cat Shoppe if you want, go to a cat show, go to Meet the Breeds...but I don't want my home used as a stopover or tour for someone who just wants to see the breed. I saw my first savannah at a cat show.

One communicable disease and your cattery/kittens are wiped out...and then how many people will be able to come and see your kittens/cats?
