California as a state does not require Rabies...individual counties and cities can though...

If your location requires it, you have to do it. If you don't, you risk losing your cat :-(

So true...in NJ, if anyone were to issue any type of complaint against you and law enforcement enters your house, if your cat does not have a rabies shot, they will confiscate the cat...

As Paige says, they can confiscate your cat. Some places might give you a grace period to do it, but some are rigid like she describes in NJ where they simply take the cat.

One of the biggest things is there isn't a test for rabies that keeps your pet alive.

The 4 year old that pulls your cats tail while saying "nice kitty kitty" gets scratched. Her over zealous parents who believe your harboring a wild animal, and certain it must be a cheetah while looking in their PETA manual for confirmation, call the authorities and insist your cat be checked out for rabies. As the test is conducted on brain tissue, no more kitty kitty and all could have been prevented with a simple shot..

If rabies is required in your state I would absolutely urge you to get it, however I believe many rabies vaccines are three years now, so be sure to ask your vet for a three-year vaccine so you don't have to go through this every year with Louis.

Nikkia...........I appreciate your offer. Depending on how bad the outcome is Wed, I might take you up on it. BTW, my vet only treats cats, nothing else. It is Feline Medical Center in Lincroft.

I somehow remember reading that the 1 year vaccine is safer, or has an advantage over the three year. I'll investigate again, but if anyone has info on this, it would be appreciated.

The three year has an adjuvant, so some may be worried about fibrosarcoma... I would not worry much about that and go with it if your vet has it.

We need to provide a copy of the rabies certificate annually along with the license fee. We went with the 3 year.

Our home vet just closed her practice and we are now hunting for a new one. Its not going to be easy....Dr. Sandy was great (homeopathic, acupuncturist, also worked as an oncologist) and the cats loved her.
