I understand your position Paige. But I don't believe that people who are worried about affordability look at a cat as just a number. From my perspective as someone who has purchased 4 SVs, it is awkward to communicate with a breeder to get to know one another, scope out the cats, have the breeder assured that you can provide a good home and then find out they can't afford the cat. Waste of time for the prospective buyer and for the breeder. People have a budget and some prefer to know that they can afford the cat, or have an idea of how long it will take to save for one, before they begin a discussion with a breeder.

But Deborah, when you bought your F1, was there a price posted...I let people know when they email or call...I just do not post prices...

My feelings are that price is something that is fluid. A lot can affect the amount. The amount of time the breeder has had to devote to the kitten to socialize him/her. Any extensive medical costs. The quality of the new home. ( personalities of the people DO enter into the decisions. ) So many things.
And the "ballpark" numbers are so close between all breeders that it is all just finding a match in people/ people/kittens.
That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

No, but by then I was pretty experienced in the ins and outs of SVs and had a range already in mind. And Sue was the first breeder I asked up front for a ballpark figure and I still felt uncomfortable doing that. Perhaps my discomfort stems from reading so many breeders' comments about how annoyed they get when they're asked up front about price. We purchasers are between a rock and hard place -- don't want to appear to just be numbers oriented and offend a breeder, yet want to know how much the cat will cost. And while some breeders may reduce their price occasionally to get the cat into a good home, just as many will not budge and are insulted at the thought. So like everything else, there are at least 2 sides to every situation and we will have our personal preferences for approaching them.

Oh I wish I would of known about all of you dedicated loving breeders/ cattery group. Instead of stumbling onto Christopher Shrik.HE doesn't keep his word! He provided minimum support, send me dreadfully sick kitten, mimeographed certificate with fill in the blank, no history of parents & doesn't return emails. I have asked him for proper lineage paper work, he doesn't respond. OH BUT HE'S EXCELLENT at keeping in touch until he's paid.

I love my kitty, PLEASE don't miss understand me. We rescued her, after HUNDREDS&HUNDREDS of dollars to get her well now were working on socializing her. Another thing Christopher said that his kittens were VERY SOCIALIZED! She has never (and will be one year old this month ) laid on my lap, or laid on my bed. I'm working with her and I have an abundance of patience and love for my little angel. Christopher is clearly in it ONLY FOR THE MONEY! I'm so jealous when I read posts how you all are such tight knit group between breeders and owners....... It makes me sad that I picked such a money hungry jerk. I'm only speaking from first hand experience, MINE! If u ever see his name RUN!
I watch Judge Judy and Judge Judy states that everyone has a right to have their own opinion, as long as it is their experience and ONLY their PERSONAL opinion. ....... NOT HEAR SAY.
If another fur baby can be added to our family I will be blessed to contact all the lovely people here.

I have done it both ways. For years I had prices posted to my website and STILL received daily messages from prospective customers asking HOW MUCH? At this point, I don't bother posting pricing. I DO expect folks to ask in their initial inquiry, but I also expect a note of introduction as well. Inquiries without any background info at all, really do not capture my attention or motivate me to respond with any detailed information. Yes, I do have a price RANGE, but often that number is not carved in stone and I have some wriggle room for the right home. Of course, without a proper introduction, I have no idea if the "right home" is being offered.... Inquiries that contain zero information other than a one liner that says "HOW MUCH" get my standard response....which is "a one liner that quotes my highest price."

LOL, same here any times i put prices on my website and people just don't read to send a short email; How much?? We know already that this is not the right person and is not to serious about it.. Anyways pricing or not every email is work because we DO replay back to hear many times nothing back from that person.

I really do not think some people realize that breeders may have MANY emails to respond to, and that each takes time away from other parts of the job..socializing, caring, checking and loving the babies ...AND their moms. And taking care of YOUR life too. Too many folks just think of themselves and not the whole picture.
Just let me say I love and respect all of you wonderful people who devote your lives to bringing into the world healthy well behaved kittens. Savannahs or other.

After I discovered the Savannah breed I began reading up and lurking, especially on this forum, to soak up as much knowledge as I could. Previously I had been of the mind that it was goofy to pay serious money for a cat since you could rescue perfectly wonderful companions from a shelter or adopt a kitten from a friend's unexpected litter. The discovery of this breed turned my mind around somewhat which was made easier by my history of freshwater fish breeding and collecting. I came to understand that when something really appeals to you on multiple levels it can be okay to put out some money.

My DSH San (avatar pic) was dying of cancer (passed away one year ago today) and he was the most loyal and incredibly socialized rescue cat I have ever known. I doubted lightning could strike twice without some serious luck so I allowed myself to consider getting Savannah cats. I'm glad I did because the two I have were very well socialized and that to me is the key to great cats. They help me remember every day how awesome San was in life.

When I decided to buy, price was a huge factor and the breeder I went with had pictures along with both price ranges and prices. Now that I have had almost a year with Yuki and Yeti, and all that time to learn more about the breed and breeders, my first thought isn't about price, instead it is socialization. Price is always going to be a factor because I know myself well when it comes to buying things for looks and I would love to have an extremely typey Savannah at some point, but personality and socialization trumps looks, Yeti has taught me great lessons in this factor and he has turned out to be beautiful without being typey. (and he was the mistake kitten when he arrived!)

As for choosing breeders, after all I have learned on this forum interacting with everyone, my considerations for another Savannah are much different than before and it no longer matters if a breeder posts prices (though I do like to have some idea of the range to expect).
