i guess also a huge factor is where the breeder is located. Like me, moved from Oregon to Mississippi, due to a divorce to make a fresh start far a way.. In the West where i build my cattery name, many knew about the Savannah's and prices and saved up and knew what they were looking for to buy from me.
Now here in the South, people have absolute no clue what a Savannah is and freak out when they ask about pricing.. So i try real hard to educate people here but get many times; I don't pay that much for a cat!!! Others from the West "complain" now i am so far away not to buy from me. So catch 22 for me here now but i know, my customers are real happy with their kittens from me, super sweet, highly socialized and beautiful also, and i am always there for support. Hope soon that people here in the South will discover this also. Still debating with my self to put prices up or not, even have several priced now on my website..

You just follow your heart. Do what YOU know is right. You will have no problems. True Savvanaites will not question your decisions or your prices. We KNOW the value of a Savannah kitten. How precious they are. Made of gold. :)

I started researching SVs almost 5 years ago when I lost my male Himy and my female Himy was diagnosed with CKD. At that time, I contacted at least a dozen in the California area. Some breeders I only contacted once because there was something "off" - not necessarily a bad person or breeder but I didn't feel a connection. For the others, I did discuss pricing. If the price was too far off, I didn't want to waste their time or mine. I also let them know that I had an elderly cat at home and would not get a kitten until she passed. I wanted them to know that the inquiry was serious but that the timing could be a few months or several years. By the time my Himy passed away in Oct 2012, I knew that I wanted a cat from Halestone. We had visited their home and interacted with their cats and felt comfortable with them. We also went to a TICA show and watched them show their SBT Hunter and we thought she was an absolute sweetheart. When they had a litter of F3's, I went to see them at 4 weeks. We had not discussed pricing in 3 years. When I saw Rafiki, I decided that she was for me and asked for her BEFORE we discussed price - she was simply right for me.

I have never posted my prices to my website. Just the way I have done it. My hope is that people will either call or that they will email a bit about what they are looking for so I have some kind of idea. I always ask what generation they are interested in and what is their price range. I have found that with a good conversation, many times even though what I have posted is out of their price range, I may have another kitten or maybe am about to retire a cat that will fit into their household nicely. Or, I will adjust my pricing to a certain degree because they offer such a good home and I have a great repoire with them and a kitten that I think deserves this famiy. I still get the short emails just saying how much, but then I also get the emails saying "do you have kittens" and sometimes I think to myself, did you not even look at all of the kittens that are posted on my kittens page? I have friends that post prices and still get the same silly emails. Some people either are just mass emailing or don't really look at your site at all. Not sure why they even bother to email. I guess since I have not posted prices for the last 15 years, I am not going to start now. This has worked for me.
Sue, this is exactly what I do as well. I will not post prices because I don't want exclude someone who might make a great pet owner but can't afford the 'average' Savannah price; but equally as important to me, I don't want to sell one of my kittens to someone just because they can afford the price without feeling assured that they can provide a great home for my baby. If asked, I will always quote a range for a young litter and tell them I will know better with the kittens are 8-11 weeks old. If it is an older kitten I will send a price along with my pre-adoption questionnaire for them to fill out - if they actually send it back to me that is the first sign that they are really interested and prepared to take on a new Savannah kitten.

I really do not think some people realize that breeders may have MANY emails to respond to, and that each takes time away from other parts of the job..socializing, caring, checking and loving the babies ...AND their moms. And taking care of YOUR life too. Too many folks just think of themselves and not the whole picture.
Just let me say I love and respect all of you wonderful people who devote your lives to bringing into the world healthy well behaved kittens. Savannahs or other.

What a refreshing post. No, not everyone will "get it" but it's nice to be reassured that some DO!! :)

Thank you Cynthia. I really mean that. You breeders have a hard job with a lot of emotional issues. I could not do it. I would become too attached to the babies to let them go. And I KNOW you all do become attached. You are just stronger than I am. :)

Price is a double edged sword. It was hard for me to ask because I didn't want to seem a tire kicker, nor did I want my heart set on a baby I couldn't afford. I wouldn't want to be insulting by offering. I negotiate for a living, so you think this would be easy for me! But when it comes to something that is going to be a loved member of the family, and you are purchasing from breeders you have researched to be reputable, the dynamics change drastically.

I know I am going to get 1 more Savannah. After that, no mas. I really want an f1, and am aiming for spring of next year (bonus time! Ha!). I would like to think I am one of those "right" homes breeders talk about, Nyah and Kovu are super loved, horribly rotten spoiled creatures who live incredibly pampered lives. But how do you put that in an email introduction and not sound self serving and discount seeking? Or how do you put the message out that you are a serious buyer, though timing isn't immediate? Pick me! Pick me for your kittens (in March)! Also, can you tell me prices or make up to $x work? I would be scared to death my email would be flagged with the crazy emoticon and forwarded to all other breeders as a warning!

Becki most F1 owners do not negotiate their Savannah kitten prices...but you might want to contact Sue Armstrong from Amara Savannahs and introduce yourself at least...John and Deborah bought their F1s from sue...let her know your plans and ask her pricing for a pet F1 Savannah cat...

I suppose that is a better plan than trying to kittennap Atticus, isn't it?
