Savannah F3, F4 or later

Hi TaiShu. Welcome to the forum. My girl is an F3. I started looking into SVs when my last Himy was around 17 or 18. I knew that I would not bring a kitten into the household to torment her so I began doing research and reaching out to breeders. My Himy lived for another 3 or 4 years so I had plenty of time to look around. In that time, I found my breeder. I was originally looking for an F2 male but fell in love with my girl (as Jim said - you will "know"!). Soon after, I found this wonderful site. When I first started looking, most of the SBTs looked more like a regular cat. This has changed dramatically. I have seen some absolutely gorgeous SBTs here. Also, my breeder has a SBT alter show cat named Hunter that totally sold my husband on the breed. She is such a sweet, outgoing goofball that it is hard not to fall in love with her! As many folks here will tell you, you may be originally attracted to the spots but it is the personality that will make you fall in love. And that personality is in all generations.

Welcome :)

As far as being able to get an idea of appearance between F3s and F4s, why don't you take a look at the pictures posted to the forum? I feel like you get a much better idea of the variety rather than googling them or looking at breeders websites.

I also loved the way the Savannahs look with the spots and the size. Never thought I´d get a Mel (black cat), but as I said I seen his picture and had to have him lol. My wife asked me how I knew that Baghira was The One. Because if you´d see us together you´d say we were ment to be together tri smug:. She said she would of never picked him from that picture....but I knew better ;).

That's what I did as soon as my account was approved here. I think I mentioned it in my last post. At least I wanted. Now I'm not sure anymore. ;)
But based on this the F3 look more exotic to me than the F4 that have been posted.
I was impressed by one F5 SBT though. If I'm not mistaken it was breeded by Margitta Graeve of
Kiwanga Savannah Cats in Germany. It was voted as the best Savannah Kitten at TICA.

Ohhh and where you from in Germany? I´m from Nürnberg tri big grin:

I'm living in the Düsseldorf area. Nuremberg is amazing. Love that city. Definitely not the worst place to be. :)

Yes, Kiwanga Wilhelm is the #1 SV kitten in TICA right now and all of Margitta's cats are absolutely gorgeous!! You are very lucky to be in Germany so you wouldn't even have to import them!!

My new boy is from a Kiwanga queen and I couldn't be happier with the way he's turning out!!

Welcome TaiShu, as I'm sure you've discovered, there are several Savannah breeders in Europe. Purchasing from the US or other country may initially sound more economical but when you count up the costs of importing it can up to double the cost of the kitten. I believe the last kitten I exported to the UK cost around $2800US just in exportation fees.

As far as type and retaining the serval look in subsequent generations, that is also fairly individual and depends upon the genetics and pedigree of the kitten's background. You can find mediocre F3s and really stunning F5s - you just have to watch the kittens and see how they develop. Of course, it would really be helpful if the kitten has older siblings that you can see pics of.

Hi Patti. Dang, that's a huge price for the export. I didn't expect this but was also not considering this as of now, for reasons you already mentioned. Nevertheless the US has a lot more breeders for Savannahs and therefore more experiences they can share, and luckily that they actually share in this forum.

I didn't expect at the beginning that the variety of look etc can be so dramatically different between the generations. That doesn't make it any easier to find the right cat of course because if you have to potentially check out all available generations on the market you've a completely different number of cats, compared to focus on F3. But of course I understand why this is the case, with the breed being so young and breeders learning new things every day. I think that's part of the process every breed goes through. Benefit of this is of though, that there are more potential cats available that might fit what I'm looking for.

What I noticed between the US and (at least) Germany is, that in Germany most Savannahs go with silver color, while I have the impression that most kittens in the US are gold. Is this right for the US or did I just not see enough breeder pages in the US to see the variety of colors there?
