Yes, Marissa, I remember years ago when my F2 Bobo was missing and I was stapling up flyers on a pole when a passerby commented "wow, that's a cool cat! If I found that I wouldn't give it back!"...yeah, thanks!

it's sad but true that some people won't give them back. Did you ever end up finding bobo?

When we got Kovu it was actually in our contract that he HAD to be on a leash & harness (if not crated) if he was outside. But even if it weren't in the contract, I wouldn't chance it.

I have thought about letting my two boys run free outside. In my childhood we had indoor/outdoor cats and they seemed so happy. BUT - they were moggies. My two cats are so beautiful and friendly my #1 fear is that someone else would steal them lol! Also, they aren't street smart... would get hit by a car I am sure if someone did not pick them up first.

My theory on that is that if you let a cat be indoor/outdoor you will have a ~50% chance of losing them in the first year, to things like cars. Then if they survive that first year they likely have learned enough to do well. But the studies show that indoor only cats live substantially longer lives than indoor/outdoor cats... and I personally don't think it would add to my cats' happiness. They have an enclosure to get fresh air out in, sit in the sun and chase insects etc. Once we offered them that option, they've not been so interested in darting out the front door...

glad you found him! It's always scary when they go missing.

Growing up we had 15-20 different cats, all strays who found their way to the barn or our home and they were brought into our home, they always were indoor/outdoor cats and we lost all but two to hawks, cars and anything else imaginable. We lived in a rural area so letting them out wasn't a big deal, plus sometimes they just had to be out since they grew up outdoors. We still have one out of them all that is still around, lately my family has pushed the fact that he stays indoors since he is getting up in age. Looking at it though out of all the cats that we fed and cared for and let into our home only one has managed to be around. The others never lasted very long.

We had a Bengal who constantly was trying to dart out the door. Finally one day he succeeded and He was gone for a week and a half and would not allow us to catch him. we finally did catch him with a live trap and he was NOT a happy camper. For awhile after bringing him back in he tried even harder to get back out and he was more skiddish and he hated our bloundhound. It was weird just how he changed his temperament by being a temporary outside cat.

I've always been scared when one of my cats would get outside. A few years ago, I had a bengal(RIP Kitty); and she jumped off my second floor balcony! I searched and searched for her all over, called shelters..etc.., I was so scared because I lived right near a real busy street, and she wasn't all that friendly either(to strangers)...but she made it home on her own about a week later...scared, skinny, and hungry. :( So, now I always try to make sure they are no where around when I open doors...but ya never know.....because these guys can be quick.

It is always tempting because they do have so much fun outside. I have an enclosure so they are safe but honestly, some like to spend more time outside than hang out with me. Okay, selfish, but it is true! I have lost 3 cats that had a habit of escaping outside of the yard over the years. Savannahs don't make good indoor/outdoor cats. It will end in heartbreak.

yeah, as much as it seems like a good idea...and that they will be happy; it usually is never a good idea; for a savannah or any cat.....you just never know what they can get themselves into.
