As an update to the first post, I'm thinking that these cats love water, but only if and when they're "ready", or, it has to be their decision and of course all bets are off if they are forced or restrained before getting into water. At least, that's the way it is with Louie. When I gave him his way at the beach in an inlet near Belmar NJ (outside of some gentle nudging into shallow water) he loved it and eventually started swimming in water over his head.
A close call a few weeks ago, which I posted about was that he did an end run around me and bolted out the door one night. He wouldn't come to me, and continued to run away...........hours of walking around looking for him were in vain. Luckily, he started banging on the screen door at 4:30 the next morning, scared and hungry. Only downside was that he got sprayed by another cat, about the face and neck. Again he wouldn't let me rinse it off. A sponge bath did no good, and the waterless crap made him smell like a French whore with the underlying urine smell still strong beneath the perfume.
Last resort was to fill the bathtub with warm water, put on three layers of sweatshirts to protect my arms, and gloves my hands. I managed to dunk him completely under three times before he wriggled free. Talked to him petted him and gave him some treats afterwords and he forgot all about it in less than 1/2 hour we were best friends again! That quick dunking completely washed out the urine..................as well as the stinky perfume from the waterless soap.
