I 'think' though that metronidazole may mask the tritrich in the sample- how long ago did you do the metro? I might be wrong, but I swear I read that somewhere. That even in a fecal test or PCR that the tritrich could be missed if the cat was on metro... Anyways- I could be wrong, but worth asking your vet!

No, you are right, Trish...I forgot about that...it takes two weeks after stopping all meds before you can get a TriTrich PCR

Kronos finished his last dose a week ago, and since then his poo has slowly been returning to the way it was prior to the meds. On the metro his poo was perfect. I hope a week is enough time off of it!

I think there is a single TF PCR panel and there is a combo PCR that tests for TF and others things as well- that one is more expensive yet. Good luck with all that!
Usually Metronidozole (Flagyl) will releave symptoms then they worsen.

Wellllll shoot. I already dropped the sample off. But my vet said if it is tritrich, the metro would only have maybe been killing some of it, so there should still be enough present to give us a positive.

Ok...well, maybe a week will be enough...I have always heard that it is two weeks, but I think with the combo, you may be right...sounds like your vet knows what he/she is doing...

So after more inquiries with my vet, and letting the thoughts settle in my head with further research as well, I am deciding to self treat for Keljin. I have been trying to contact the pigeon suppliers online as recommended (thanks Lori!) Unfortunately all sites are out of stock of Ronidazole. Either way $30 for a bottle of 100x 30mg tablets sounds much easier than spending $160 at the vet for a PCR, plus the cost of compounding meds on top of that easily over $200. The online Ronidazole ranges from $30-$60 and that suits much better to my financial needs.

I gave my vet a call and she is more than willing to get him weighed and help me figure out proper dosage. I am relieved as well as my pocket, currently I am still just waiting to track down a site so I can order the stuff!
