Vacations with Savannah?

I was going to make a post about this as well. :)

We are going on vacation to Florida in September. We will be gone for about 2 weeks. I have a friend up here that would LOVE to keep him, but she has two other male cats (both are fixed, as is Kovu), but any time she comes over Kovu hisses at her & does NOT want her to pet him. :/ Makes me sad, cause she is such a cat lover, I'm wondering if he just needs to get adjusted to the cat smell on her? I'm worried about how he would do with other cats.

We have another friend, who again, would love to watch Kovu, but his brother is living with him & he is severely allergic to cats, so thats a no-go.

He gets super stressed when going to the vet, so I couldn't imagine leaving him there in boarding. He'd probably have a heart attack.

So that leaves the option of us taking him. Which is what I would personally feel safest with. MIL (who we are staying with) has 2 female cats. So Idk how he would do with them, he's never had to be around other cats before. But at least that way we can monitor him. BUT, that would also mean less that we can do while on vacation. We were thinking about going to Orlando for 2-3 days, but Idk how Kovu would do in Sea World. lol

Kovu would get used to your friend, it just takes time...he is smelling her cats on her. Taj does the same thing with my vet tech who stops over on occasion and then he gets over it.

I don't think Kovu would like Sea World, LOL!!! I guess taking him is an option...and you have time between now and then to make up your mind...I'm sure there will be lots of advice on this topic, so no worries.

My husband wants to install baby video monitors just so that just in case on the rare occassion that one of us is not home, he knows they're okay. :D Could be useful if we ever had to leave them alone and had a friend babysit.

Just wishful thinking but in a few years I want them to go with us on road trips or on mini vacations if they are comfortable so I'm just currently looking at places that are cat/ pet accessible. Not sure about Sea World Ashley! But if they could go imagine how much fun or horror that a fish is bigger than him Kovu would have!! :) And the beach was not but is now on the list of ideas, thanks Julie!

I like the video monitor idea...I have often thought about setting up some web cams just to see what they do when I'm not home ;)

And I plan on taking a road trip in the future in an RV and would take the savannahs...Cisco would stay at home because he is afraid of his own shadow...

I may just have to have Julia visit more so he can get used to the smell on her. She is knowledgeable on the Savannah breed & would be reliable enough. And she def. knows not to let him slip out the door! That is my biggest fear about someone coming in & out so much is that he may get out.
If it were up to me, MIL would just come here. lol But Glenn insists on sunshine and Florida beaches. lol

We go away often for weekends or 7 night cruises. We leave Tink (F6 almost 2)' CJ (Scottish Fold about 6 yrs), and Nadia (Russian Blue about 10). For a weekend, we just make sure all litter boxes are clean, water bowl filled, auto dry food feeder filled. We have never had a problem. If we are gone for more than a weekend, we usually have our daughter come over every 2-3 days to check food, water, litter boxes, play etc. If she can not make it, her husband will. We are all going away for a week in June and we have made arrangements with the housecleaning company to have the housecleaners that come every 2 weeks, to come to the house every other day for $20.00 per visit to feed , play etc. Sue

I'm sure we would be saying things like "I knew I didn't leave the tv on!! My cats are turning them on!! Wait... How in the world did they learn to do that?!?!" :D

A RV! Brilliant! Also going on the list! They'd definitely feel more comfortable in one spot than having to go from car-hotel room -car- hotel room etc.

I know others probably do the same Sue and I don't think there is a right or wrong. I just won't do it - but that is me...I cannot imagine leaving my cats alone for days at a time...what if one of the cats gets sick? But as I said, this is me and a personal preference.

Plus, Zuri eats whole prey, so that is an issue onto itself.

Sue, that's interesting. You leave them without having anyone check in on them for the weekend or couple days at a time... Wouldn't the litter box get too dirty/ full after one day? (we don't have our Savannahs yet but we thought once a day cleaning minimum is a must.) The litterbox alone I couldn't imagine leaving them without someone to check on for them if it gets full. Would you mind if I inquired about the size of your litterbox or if you have multiple for your multiple cats?

I'm curious as to people who have used pet sitting services (I've seen them online but not sure if I'd ever trust them if all my friends of family couldn't babysit!)

We have both a Littermaid and a Smart Scoop. Both are automatic, thus. Have had no issues with 3 cats. Since the same housekeepers come every other week, they know the house, they know the animals, they already have a key, are licensed and bonded, they are the logical choice. I know that the housecleaners play with Tink all the time. CJ always hides from everyone but us. Nadia will say hello to them but that is about it. Sue
