Vets and Vaccinations

Are those things that are typically screened for? It seems Jengo has always been super healthy outside of a random cold maybe once a year. This year it seemed to hit him harder than usual but the vet said to watch him and as long as he was eating, pooping normal and not vomiting they recommended to see if it passes. It did. I'm just wondering if its something I can have tested.

So does giardia ever go away or just go dormant like herpes? He did have it before I got him. My vet said its a common ailment that cats get especially if there are a lot of them and so are worms, in fact they are born with them. The vet said all of this stuff has life cycles and you have to catch it at the right time. Is that true?

I just want to be sure he's being treated properly.

We have eye drops and do another round of panacur this weekend. I cancelled my trip because I need to be here to get him all of his meds. I will say he runs around acting fine. It's just been stressful getting him back to normal. Poor thing switched homes, food, lost his buddies, had to make new friends, had some tape worm, some vaccinations, blood drawn and now the eye drops. Through it all he's been so good.
The only thing I know of that is routinely screened for is FeLV/FIV, the others are only tested for (in my experience) when the cat shows signs of illness (unless you're a paranoid person like me and routinely test every new kitty that comes into the home). As for the giardia, as Brigitte pointed out, it is in most water sources so very difficult to get away from. It's not that it goes dormant, it's just not normally present at a level to where it will cause illness. However, stress can change that and allow it to flare. I believe a PCR is usually sensitive enough to pick up giardia even when it's not at high levels, but it is also true that even the most sensitive test is not 100% accurate, so you can get false negatives, and false positives as well.

I bet I'm dealing with both. Giardia flare up and a tape worm which we haven't seen worms since round 1 of panacur so after this I'm betting we're good. His eye is seemingly better at times but we still have more days to go @ 4x per day. He's certainly been stressed, new home, new food, new litter, new friend...I'm considering putting him back in quarantine because he's taking on some on Jengo's skittishness and why wouldn't he? These meds are scary and invasive, particularly the eye drops. It's been a bit of a role reversal the last week, Jengo is more social but Biz is less.

It's frustrating to get false negatives. It's all frustrating. I just want to do what's best for my babies and not getting clear answers is upsetting. Having him on medication always is sad for us. Outside of that, he's been an amazing blessing and a good friend to Jengo, we adore him. We will keep medicating everyone and testing every one until he's better.

We screen everyone too, we got Biz on a Saturday and dropped a fecal sample Sunday and had him seen by the vet Monday.

This, no matter how frustrating is good, I would love to get involved at some point with rescuing/fostering and so it's all good experiences to have. It's easy to get mad at the vet especially when they've made snide comments about Savannah's.

The good news also is that Jengo has remained pretty healthy in spite of it all. He could never endure what a Biz has. Biz is a fighter and tough little guy. He's strong and willing.

Does anyone have suggestions for probiotics? It's a good idea for both kitties and Jengo gets stopped up easily and the other has too much. I bet they could both benefit.

It is not at all surprising that Biz is getting a bit skittish from all the medications. Try to make it such a bad experience if you can by following the medication with a special treat such as freeze dried chicken, or whatever he loves most. Keep loving him and playing with him, he will forgive you once it's over. Can I ask what kind of eye drops you are giving four times a day?

I use Probios probiotics and have had fantastic results with it. I get the powder and just sprinkle it over their food as long as they are on antibiotics and for a few days afterwards. It doesn't seem to be unpleasant, at least I've never had a cat yet that has had a problem eating it.

Probios is a good choice, it's milk-based (digested so tolerated just fine) so smells good to the kitties. When you have multiple kitties, the tub of powder is very economical too :)

I also recommend Proviable as it comes in two forms: one as a paste that also contains kaolin and pectin which is great if the cat is having loose stools as those additional ingredients soothe the intestinal tract and help firm stools. And then it also comes in capsules that you can either give to them or open and sprinkle on food.

Any idea where I can purchase these? :)

Also I'm noticing his stool is starting to form up a bit. It's still a wet patty quite often but it's starting to form. Any chance that between worms and a giardia flash he just had loose stools? He finished the panacur a few days ago. He finished eye drops today so I want to give him a minute to be med free and see if his stool will continue he to harden.

The internet is your friend!

Yes, with any antibiotic treatments a cat's gastrointestinal tract can be unsettled and take a little while to settle down again.

I included a link to purchase the Probios from in my previous post. If you haven't done so already, I would get him started on some probiotics asap.

We have firm stool! Yay! He's pooping normal now after a few days off of the last round of panacur! Woohoo! I took 8 weeks but we got him healthy! Yay! Definitely going to give both cats probiotics! He's gotten a littl bigger I dare say too. Hopefully now that he's totally off meds he can go back to not being so scared. He's gotten a little skittish some of it is Jengo's teaching some of it is fear of having meds rubbed on him or dropped in his eye. He's been such a good boy through all of it. So happy to see him bouncing back.

Now he needs to learn where to poop in the litter box as he's irritating Jengo with his "poop anywhere" philosophy. Jengo goes in and moves it all the time, lol. Jengo has a system and Biz doesn't seem to care.

I'm glad Biz is back to health. Just love him Charley, he will mellow and be your lover boy. And Jengo will be happier too. ;)
