I'm so sorry to hear that Chuck's issue is not an easy one to solve. I have dropped $1k many times at the vet's, but he should give you an itemized breakdown of the charges so you know what you are paying for. I hope he can quickly figure out the problem and find a solution for Chuck!

I always get an itemized breakdown. My other thought is wouldn't an X-ray show if there was a blockage? I paid $91 for an X-ray last Sat. At the vets. My thoughts and prayers are with you that he gets better fast. Sue

Oh no. Hopefully the vet can get a handle on it quickly. I know its a little late to help for this issue but you can get pet insurance and it very reasonable (around 20/month or less). I found this link that gives you a ton of info including customer feedback.

Well just an update...Chuck is home and appears to be doing ok...now, we have to try and feed him the food the Vet gave us...he isn't interested. We will have to figure out the best food for this guy...he's been spoiled on dry food and that is what i need to cut out

You truly need to get him on canned/wet/raw type foods. If the vet gave you Science Diet, sigh, it certainly won't hurt, but the issue is the balance of phosphates, ash etc. in the food and moisture content. Dry foods are the number one culprit for URIs in male cats. What did they determine what going on?

Cystitis is highly probable. They didn't actually say that, but they stated that there was microscopic blood in his urine and "crystals" which is why urinating is problematic for him right now. BUT, since he's been home he's had a huge pee, a bunch of small ones, but honestly he looks better than last night, AND he's peeing in the litter box consistently. This is quite different than last night. we need to give him muscle relaxants and pain meds, + a IV liquid. UGH, we haven't done the IV. They showed me how to do it at the vets but...hahaha i am a little nervous ;-) Yes, we need to cut him off dry foods, maybe a tiny bit as a treat once and a while but get chicken and fish for him as a usual thing

Chuck update. I am really at a loss. Took our Chuck to the vet and he is slowly passing urine under sedation and painkillers. the vet doesn't know if it's an obstruction yet but is concerned that the blood-work #'s are pretty high. they want to keep him overnight 1K$, + they aren't sure if it's an obstruction but if it is likely another 1k$ do these numbers seem a bit high???? we can't afford that!!!! tough decision time coming

Where are you located? Is this the ER vet or your regular vet? There is a program called Care Credit that most vets offer. If this vet does not have it ask them if they can refer you to someone who offers it. If there is a blockage it needs to be treated.
