What The Pee Is Going On???

Not sure what kind of pine you are using. It can be a good litter.

I have a warning if you consider using this produce or any one using the following. My friend loved this new pine litter by Tidy cat. Switched every one to it. Was great. But one kitten sniffed it, got it in the nose and got what seemed like a URI. Which was strange since no other kitten was sick and he did not sneeze much. Well $800 dollar later at the last moment they found the small piece of pine in the nose. Had to be sedated to flush it out. If you have smaller kittens I would recommend against this produce.

It is hard to find but the horse pellets made of corn cob works great. I love the pine smell but I know some cats can be sensitive as well as just not like them, the cob is pelleted but is a smaller pellet. When they are young, sometimes they just go "oh, my, have to pee" and go. Even a 5 month old will do that sometimes- SVs mentally mature later. UTI are pretty uncommon in female cats and being that she is young, I won't even consider it. It is good that you are aware and can nip it in the bud early.
I did have an F2 that went everywhere, especially poop. I could never figure out why or how to stop her behavior. She had some insecurity issues as well.

Well.. we are back from the vet and another 450 bucks later for Conjunctivitis, blood test and urine test the results for UTI came back negative.... She has used the Litter box with the new litter so far and just now as I was working in the office she meowed several times and then tried to pee in the corner of the floor which I stoped her and she ran back upstairs. The litter box is clean although new litter but she has used it for several days without any problems. In many years of pet owenership, this little girl has been the most difficult one I have ever seen so far with one problem after the next. The breeder is suggesting that its possible she has UTI without being detected... The search for answers go on, we ll see what happens next.

I'm sorry you're having so many problems with your little one. When you say the results for the UTI were negative, do you mean they aspirated a urine specimen and sent it for cultures? Also, has she already been spayed? Is this the first time she's shown any signs of conjunctivitis? What did the vet say was the cause? Did he give you antibiotics for it?

She is not spayed yet (5 months old) we just did the Pre op blood work and we probably get her spayed in a few weeks. The vet aspirated a urine sample and tested it tonight and results were negative. Layla has now been having eye issues for a month and half with on and off flare ups. We were using antibiotic eye drop that had steroids and she got better after using it two weeks on and off (one week on and one week off) As of this morning her right eye was half shut so we took her in.. Now she is on a different antibiotic eye drops and I know this poor cat must hate us for all the crap we have put her through.

Well I still say the most obvious cause of the inappropriate peeing is that she is still intact. Have you run an Upper Respiratory Disease PCR panel on her to try to identify the culprit causing the conjuctivitis?

You know... No, how come the vet is not doing or telling us they need to do this? I have started to think we may need to switch vets, feel like I am being taken for a ride...

If you are asking about the URD PCR panel I think since it is an expensive test most vets just assume the cat/kitten has herpes and treats with antibiotics to prevent (or treat if suspected) secondary bacterial infections which are common with herpes carriers. However, I believe the herpes statistics primarily reflect shelter animals, not kittens that come from breeders. I am fairly fanatical about testing any new cat or kitten that comes into my home and in the past 10 years have only ever had one test positive for herpes (and of course kept her quarantined until I could place her in a pet home).

What I find most interesting is that vets most often treat with amoxicillin or clavamox, but the two most common bacterial infections (which the PCR identifies) are best treated with doxycycline. Unfortunately, herpes, as with most viral infections is most often a lifelong condition and even after the kitten recovers from the initial symptoms it still becomes a carrier and can infect other cats - which of course is why it is so endemic in the feline population :(
