What's up with the Animal Rights issue?

...It is possible that the goal of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management was simply to get a list of addresses of *local* owners of Bengals and Savannahs -- so that they could squeeze them for money. ......
This is the type of crap that just sets me off. Governmental fishing expedition, with really no foundation of regulation violations. Thankfully, the bullies were rebuffed and some legal counsel was immediately available. (And I'm rather conservative, but I sure don't like seeing peoples' rights trampled.)

Cristy, they came today into the showhall armed...and the Bengal and Savannah peeps were asked to leave the state...

I did not have a good time today and I don't know many others who did either. It was extremely stressful for many of us and our cats felt the stress unfortunately.

I do not believe they wanted the names to squeeze anyone...it is nearly impossible to get a permit because of RIs belief that the efficacy of the rabies vaccine is impossible to judged in hybrids.

More tomorrow....

Just reporting what Francine, Melissa, Poppy, and others told me. I can readily appreciate that it was much more upsetting for owners of Bengals and Savannahs than the rest of the group. The good news is, Francine did not give these guys what they asked for -- and I believe the NE Region is planning now to move the 2014 Annual to another state.

My heart goes out to all that had to deal with such a stressful ordeal. I would have been scared that something could have happened to my pet such as the state taking possession of my pet, fines etc. This is totally unacceptable. I would hope that TICA and CFA boycott RI. When people go to these shows, $ is spent on meals, hotel rooms, gas etc. Sue

Maybe they did expect to get names of people that have them without a permit in the state?

So they directly asked you to leave? I'm glad you didn't!

If it's a question of efficacy of the rabies vaccine, the AVMA should strap a set on as they are administering a lot of these vaccines to hybrids. Largely our cats are not at risk as they aren't outside unattended and even with the vaccine the AVMA doesn't back it up. State law says your cat is legal, while at the same time saying that your cat needs a rabies vaccination. Then of course your vet will administer the vaccination without ever having the discussion that legally it does nothing, essentially pegging the "cover your ass" meter.

AVMA won't stick their heads out for anything- that's pretty obvious by now. Sad, but true.

And Mrs. CC- I think the poop emoticon is accurate!
