It sounds like a good place to start on this would be the Providence Chamber of Commerce. Those guys will have the political ties to make sure it doesn't happen again unless they have an unreported account of being mauled by a domesticated cat. From what I understand the show attracts 8,000 attendees, had about 10,000 sq feet dedicated to TICA and cat specific vendors and certainly a fair amount of dollars pumped into the local economy.

Government isn't known for having much in the way of foresight into the unintended consequences of their protect the public legislative activities. Sounds like this debacle is a great example. Note too that most on duty law enforcement officers are required to carry their guns as part of their uniform, so that part isn't as upsetting as the yahoo who made the complaint that dispatched the officer to begin with. I don't mean to imply there aren't officers who can get a bit over zealous in their roles, mind you. But most understand they have to enforce laws, and that doesn't always mean busting out swat team techniques when a conversation would be effective. Disclaimer: I don't know if having to carry as part of their uniform is fact here, my statement is general in nature. I am also not implying knowledge of RI laws pertaining to this situation. I will state for the record treating a SV as you would a liger is ridiculous on its face, and you would hope logic would prevail, but logic isn't the strong suit of AR zealots.

As far as we know, there was no complaint. They claim that they notified the convention center management and/or pet expo management in advance that they were coming to inspect, and they told journalists that it was routine inspection. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that they *did* notify management beforehand, but that is what RI DEM claimed.
Like you, I thought about the fact that the guns might be required with the uniform. However, if that is so, it should have been part of their job training to be aware of their impact on the public. They should have been taught that carrying guns makes a person seem threatening. They should have been careful to be courteous and use no more force -- verbal or physical -- than necessary. This was supposedly a *public health* inspection of peaceful citizens in a crowded public setting. It was *not* supposed to be a raid conducted at an illegal event, such as a dog fight, if you see what I mean.
Particularly so soon after mass shootings in Colorado and in Connecticut, these officials should have been aware that packing guns, making extraordinary demands right off the bat, and refusing to show ID in a crowded venue was more than unprofessional. It was stupid.
I'm not sure these folks were AR-minded. It may be RI's departmental culture at fault. I remember some Los Angeles Animal Control staffers trying to catch a cow loose in the neigborhood when I was a kid. They were obviously unfamiliar with cattle and fearful of them. They would not let any of us kids grab the cow's halter and bring her to a halt. Instead, they were trailing that critter across the neighborhood, hands on their guns and full of macho and bluster to cover their nervousness. I don't know what happened. The cow just kept trotting farther and farther away. I hope they did not shoot her.

My understanding is that there was a complaint that Bengals and Savannahs were at the show and this had absolutely nothing to do with HC or any of the sort.
A bengal breeder was in fact fined and has been ordered to place her breeding cats within 30 days, so all the BS being spun about HC and routine inspections is plain hogwash...

Paige, who told you there was a complaint and about the fine. I have been talking to Francine and Susan a bunch and had not heard that at all. Not questioning your info. Just wondering who learned of this and how.
Cristy, I can talk to you off-list about this...I don't think talking to Susan would help, since she wasn't there...All I can say is this...Francine pretty much spelled it out in her note on the TICA members list...this really had not much to do with HC's, although they were asked for after the fact as were rabies certs...

I think if carrying a side arm is part of the uniform then we would have seen them packing on Saturday. However, my understanding is they came unarmed on Saturday yet returned on Sunday prominently displaying firearms. My theory is that our TICA ladies were just so daunting to them on Saturday that they didn't think they could handle them without the additional intimidation of potential physical bodily harm
