I wanted names of African origin for the cats. Some are Swahili and some come from other African languages.

Feyd Panzi Maliik = Silver Grasshopper King so named because of his color and because he is the king of jumpers in the house.

Taji = Prince
Silver Grasshopper King?!!! OMG that is hilarious! I had been wondering since I joined this forum what the origins of the name "Malik" was but to put it mildly, I was way off!

Juba Kai = Handsome Juba. There is a small river named Juba in an African country I no longer remember the name of.

The outlier is Atticus. He has a Roman name. When I was anticipating his arrival and wondering about a name, I swear I heard his little voice in my head saying "I'm Atticus". I really wanted a name of African origin for him but his little spirit was adamant that he was Atticus. So it is.

Love it! I am glad I am not the only one hearing voices.

We named Ella after Ella Fitzgerald. We had two Bengal brothers that lived to be 15 and 16. They were named Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Ella is our first female and she has a beautiful voice so Ella was perfect!

Coming up with a name for Amani was harder than I imagined.. we mostly had had rescues that were already adult and already came with a name.

I wanted a nice sounding name for him, it would have to fit his appearance and character, and, it would have to have a meaning.

When we choose him at 5 weeks old his breeder told us that if we wanted, we had to choose a name fast for it to be on his pedigree. Panic.. How to choose a name for him while we hardly know him yet!

After a long search through many lists I finally came up with the name Amani, which in African means, harmony, peace trust and safety. In Arabic it means, to desire. All the wishes I have for him to feel and become in one name.. I needed to search no more

In practice.. we hardly ever call him by his name :LOL: It's either maw-tee or derpy. And he really listens to it! When I call him, wherever he is in the house he comes racing at me immediately at high speed. Maybe because it mostly means cuddling, playing or even better, getting a treat :rolleyes:
