Why Savannah Kittens Should Not Leave before 12-16 Weeks

We got Shyla at 13 weeks....and it was rough waiting that long, because she was 2 weeks when we first saw her. But, it was nice that the breeder lived only twenty minutes away; so we were able to visit every week until she came home! :)

Any breeder releasing kittens at 7 or even 8 weeks old is being highly irresponsible in my opinion, and I would strongly caution anyone from buying from them! The absolute earliest is have taken delivery of a kitten is at 10 weeks old (2 separate instances) and they were handled with kid gloves when they arrived. The earliest mine leave is 12 weeks old, and if that is a deal breaker then so be it. The health and well being of our kittens is our first priority and a good pet owner will understand and respect that they need to be properly vaccinated, weaned, wormed and socially well adjusted before leaving.

We got Spencer when he was 20 weeks. Our other DSH we got young, prob 8 weeks so I thought 20 weeks was a bit older. But he was just perfect at 20 weeks, so friendly and affectionate.

I know what you mean...I rescued Cisco, my DSH boy, from the streets at 6 weeks old. He was feral, very sick with Giardia at the time and my little boy cost me a fortune...he is now almost 9 years old and such a good boy! Zuri is his best friend and although he still hides when the doorbell rings, he has really come out of his shell since Zuri came into his life...often circumstances led us to get rescue or other kittens earlier than we should...

I honestly think kittens bond equally well at 6 months than at 3 months, at least in my experience they have. At 6 months old I think they can be more confident and gregarious so maybe even adapt quicker. I think the hardest thing is to have to WAIT until a kitten is 12 weeks or older when you are the buyer. I try my best to keep them up to date with pics and videos and silly email stories... and like Ashley's case often the 12 weeks becomes 14 weeks as mine need two vaccinations and sometimes that might end up taking a week longer because of an upset tummy delaying a vaccination time so I really ought to start saying 14 weeks rather than 12 weeks when people ask!

We're getting our new kitten from a large breeder. We know her approximate 'arrival date' and assumed that she would be about 12 weeks old then. I received the contract in the mail a few days ago and, according to her birth date, she will only be 10 weeks old on that date.

It seems that this breeder routinely sends out kittens at around 10 weeks old. Should I be concerned about this? Will I need to take special precautions when she arrives that I wouldn't otherwise need to take if she were 12 weeks?

I don't think you need to be worried, although I think kittens do much better when 12-16 weeks when having to be flown. That being said - I got Taj at 10 weeks...he was fine.
