Ugh... I'm SO sorry for your loss... I can't even begin to imagine what that feels like.

I have a followup question regarding the passing of Maestro and my F3 girl.....

I am a bit concerned about my remaining girl (8 mos old F3). We stayed at friends while Maestro was sick and she got used to hanging out with their dogs and similar Savannah girl kitten. I finally brought her home about 4 days ago where she is now the sole pet in the house and I am the only person. I work 9 hour days so she's been alone quite a bit so I'm sure she's a little depressed. I've noticed that she's not jumping for her feather toy the way she used to and isn't as energetic as she was (this is how Maestro began). I know it could be depression. SHe's also coming down from a heat cycle in the last day or two so hormones could be a factor. Her ears seemed a bit warm to me today and she's been sniffling about 2-3 times a day for a week or two. I put her on Lysine back in March for this and it cleared up so I'm not too worried. I put her on it again now. But I am worried that if Maestro passed away from FIP (vet could not confirm), that she could have gotten it the virus. I know she can become a carrier and not actually develop FIP, but I am concerned. I tried to check if she was wobbly and she seems ok (not perfect, but not wobbly). Again, just enough to concern me that she's not herself and this is how Maestro started to go downhill. Her nose is also dry, but I've always noted that despite reading that their nose should be wet. That is nothing new.

I may very well be reading into this too much... she may just be grieving the loss of Maestro, or the loneliness of moving back home and being alone during the day, or it could be heat cycle-related. She's eating normally and drinking and no litter box issues (no diarrhea, etc.). For the most part she's play, but something seems off (less energetic, not jumping like she used to, not eager to climb her tree as much).

I'm trying not to worry, but due to what happened with Maestro, I can't help it.

Does anyone have any thoughts? or just tell me to relax....

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, she probably is depressed and may eventually need a buddy! Those are long hours for her to be completely alone when she is used to company. And animals definitely grieve...that being said, you may want to get her check out by your vet just to make sure she is not coming down with something.

Also, she should probably be spayed sooner than later...

I think I must have missed that the final diagnosis was FIP. If so, statistically speaking it is unlikely that an unrelated cat in the same household will also come down with FIP - only about 5% of cats with Corona convert to FIP. That being said, I don't think it would hurt to have the vet check her out. In my experience, females usually get more animated when in heat, but can develop a uterine infection called pyometra if not spayed that could certainly make them appear run down (and has a high mortality rate as well so would need to be treated).

Have her checked, if only for your peace of mind!
Cats get colds just like we do, unless they are persistent they should not be a worry. Also, check the temperature rectally! An elevated temp is often a sign of generalized infection and needs treatment.
But, as has been said, animals grieve, too.

Why has no definite conclusion been reached? Autopsy?

I have found that few vets in my area understand FIP. Sad, but true.

I am sorry for your loss. Hopefully your vet suggested a necropsy since they never figured out exactly what was going on. This would be very helpful . Again I am sorry for your loss.

Steve I am so very sorry for the loss of your baby Maestro. I would take your girl in just to make sure nothing is going on. I'm praying that all goes well with her. If nothing shows up, then I certainly would get her spayed once she's acting more normally and then get her a buddy. JMHO! Very possible that she is depressed from the loss of her companion. Please keep us updated.
