Matt, you are so lucky your eye didn't get scratched...looked pretty close! I know there are people out there that don't have any common sense with their pets and don't keep them under control...I see that kind of thing when I bring my cats to the vet, alot of dogs don't know how to behave even on a leash...they are pulling and tugging the owner and jumping on other people and barking! I think some of those pet owners need to be sprayed with pepper spray! Hope your scratch heals up all right.

We've had a couple of encounters with idiots not keeping their dogs on leashes as well. Kovu was freaking out one day & scratched me up pretty good (I actually ended up with cat scratch fever) The owner said, "Your cat is twice the size of my chihuahua, it'll be fine." Um, no, its not! Obviously my cat doesn't care for your dog and the law is that he needs to be on a leash regardless if you think its fine or not!
Another neighbor is constantly letting his mastiff outside without a leash. Luckily we haven't had any encounters between him & Kovu, but it scares me to think of how Kovu (or the Mastiff) would react.

oh wow, i take my cat out all the time.....makes me think i should def get a little can of mace just incase...
and sorry to change the subject a little, but how about the other way around?..sort of... What do you say to people with tiny dogs or children if he/she/it is interested in your cat and you're not sure if it could be a friendly interaction, and playful yet possibly too rough interaction, or just a totally negative one?

I think I'd err on the side of caution in letting children or little dogs...really, ANY dog...to interact--sniff noses or play---with your cat while out and about. It's not a controlled environment and you have no idea how the dogs, the kids or your cat might react, no matter how much the dog owner and kid parents tell you their dog loves cats and the kids are really good with animals. I think you can fulfill their desire to see him by holding him and letting them admire him from afar, or even a gentle pet or two on your cat's back, IF your cat has proven to be good with kids. And remember these are strange kids, and strange dogs in an outdoor environment. You don't want to create a potentially negative experience for your cat, you and the public.....so play it safe

well im trying to get my cat used to dogs more, i dont want him to always be terrified. So i get to know a few people in my neighbourhood and come out in the evenings so they can interact with each other. As far as kids go, i let one couple's little kids play with him a little, but i warned the parents that he plays rough and might use teeth. Though come to think of that i need to protect myself as well...so maybe kids isnt such a good idea anymore. Dont want crazy parents to try and sue me.

No...no need to set yourself up for a lawsuit and leaving a negative impression of Savannahs. If your cat is using his teeth and plays rough, playing with kids right now is not a good idea. They can still interact with him using a long handled wand toy, or toss balls or other toys for him. All with your and the parent's supervision, of course.

and im also considering getting my cat a rabies shot, as another step to protect me and my cat 'just incase'

Yes....asap! Do you know what your area's laws are concerning rabies vaccines for cats? You don't want him biting or nipping someone without a current rabies vaccine. He may be held in quarantine...or worse, depending on your laws if he does not have one....
