Bi Lateral Heart Murmur... :(

Okay...

I want to say- I am not a vet. I am just someone with some kitty experience, but others have more kitty experience then I :)

There are often innocuous heart murmurs that kittens grow out of- but I think they are usually gone before 6 months of age. This is a condition that is also common in human infants and when someone is worried about a minor heart murmur when their kitten first gets home- I'd tell them to give it time and re-check at 6 months.

At nine months, I'm not sure the kitten will 'grow out of it'. I wish Per was on here to give a better definitive answer on this one. It is NOT the breeder's responsibility, per se, to get a cardiac ultrasound. Right now- she has done the responsible thing and informed you of what her vet has found- now the ball is in your court.

What do YOU want? If you think a cardiac ultrasound should be done before the kitten is shipped- then I think you should inquire as to the possibility of having that done. I WILL tell you- cardiac work-ups are NOT cheap. Typically, a cardiac work-up can be well over $500 (I am thinking more so towards $1000 locally- but we have higher vet bills here then most places).

No one can even begin to guess about your kitty's future condition without a further work-up.

Ugh- I am so sorry! I wish I could be a bit more definitive on things, but it's very hard. It's going to come down to what you are comfortable with and what you feel you can deal with. YOU DO need to talk to your breeder, however, about how accepting a kitten with said condition already diagnosed will effect your contract.

I am so sorry to hear this tragic news :( This is an awful decision to have to make.

There are such things as innocent murmurs that go away... I had a murmur as a child and outgrew it in a few years. I still have my heart checked out by a cardiologist every few years because I am scared lol, and I am always fine, great heart.

However, a murmur could be an indication of a severe problem that could get worse and costly, and life-shortening to your pet.

At this point it is take a chance it is an innocent murmur, or cut your losses and look elsewhere. I do think that if you go ahead and get him you should be given a significant discount. A grade 2 still is not a grade 1... so the murmur is louder. I believe the scale of rating a murmur goes up to 6.

No no no, with something like this, it MUST be checked out thoroughly before sending the pet off to a new home.

She is not willing to pay because of how cheap she is already letting him go ($2000 shipped, so that is already discounted). We do not have an extra $500-1000 to pay for tests right now either. He was also born with an extended sternum, I'm not sure if that has any relation.

Not willing to pay? She is not willing to further exam what is wrong with her beloved baby that she brought into this world? Does the breeder care about the condition of her cat? Am I wrong here to think that is perhaps a red flag?

I am really sorry but this is making me emotional :( I am so sorry.

Not on her dollar she is not because she was selling him to me for $2000 shipped and he is an F2. You're telling me Alisha, I am VERY emotional at the moment here at work trying not to cry. I just can't seem to win. I get one bought out from underneath me, then I wait a month on a litter and it is stillborn, now this?!

Wish I could give you a big hug. Please don't despair. For what it's worth, 2 years ago I returned a kitten to the breeder because he arrived with 2 subluxating patellas. My vet's approx. estimate of surgery for each leg as $4000 with no guarantee of success. I didn't want to put myself through that so I sent him back. It broke my heart and I'm still not over it but the right kitten did come along for me and I'm sure one will come along for you.

Paul, I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear this turn of events....I know you have been let down before with getting a kitten or cat, but I tend to believe things turn out the way they do for a reason....I would NOT make a decision tonight. The cat needs to be tested and checked before he leaves for the airport and possibly your home. I have no experience with his condition, but I would want him thoroughly examined and the possible scenarios of his quality of life spelled out to me. I realize you have all of your money to get him; would Dawn refund any or all of it under the circumstances? I believe the right Savannah is out there for you, whether it is this boy or another....
