So we are basically talking about being gone 2 full days plus 1 overnight and arriving back home very late. Not very long in the overall scheme of things.

Do you have a largish room that he could be confined to so the damage could be minimized and the sitter could definitely know that he is OK?

My current cats do not travel well but it sounds like Louie might be OK. I remember you asking about the odd zoned out reaction. I have never seen that - mine have always either loved going in the car or screamed bloody murder and panted during the entire journey. When you have taken him in a car, how is he upon arrival? Does he quickly return to his normal self or does he seem traumatized? And, like you, I am not sure what to do with him while you are at the transmission shop. Leaving him for 8 hours in a foreign environment without you there sounds scary.

I only have taken him to the store with me, to my mother's house, or to the vet's. In all cases, he is "zoned out" and calm. When I arrive home, he perks up as I approach my house.

Maybe while I'm in the transmission shop, I can keep him in the crate and have him nearby. Honestly speaking, I'll miss him probably as much as he'll miss me.

I'm in Ocean Township near West Park Ave and Route 18 intersection. My house has an "open" floorplan and Lou has the run of the place except for master bedroom, office, and TV room whose doors are kept closed. The entire place is carpeted except for the kitchen and bathrooms. There is no way that I could block the kitchen to keep him confined to it.

Good to know that I MIGHT have the option of hiring you. I'm thinking that this short road trip might be a good test case to see how Louie would travel with me on a longer vacation. He's such a trouper, and so resilient that I'm leaning towards taking him with me. I will miss him for those 2 days.

Oh no Hun. I can't take care of Louie. I work crazy hours. I was asking because my vet knows Savannah's, makes house calls, and might be willing to do it himself or ask his tech.

Kim, our sitter, comes twice a day for an hour each and charges $25 a day, $30 on weekends. She charges by the day, not by the visit. But, then, we're in Durham, NC.

She started her own pet sitting business, is great with the kids, and has taken lots of classes like vet first aid so she's ready for emergencies.

And we've had her come and visit with the cats--especially Ziggy. Jax will love anyone, so long as he's fed, and Oni will eat in her own time. Ziggy takes more--he deeply misses me (not so much Carolyn) and can get rather pissy when I'm gone. Kim takes him in stride, and does an excellent job.

I'll keep it in mind, if I don't take Louie with me. As stated early in this thread, I see that one very important thing to ensure that things go well is that Louie is familiar/comfortable with the caretaker.
