Hi Chris,
Our boys play hard, they love to run and jump and climb. We put in a 9ft "bookcase" which doubles as a cat climbing structure. We also have a 6 ft cat tree in another room, and three smaller ones.
They also love to get on top of our kitchen cabinets.

Our boy Diablo did chew when he was teething, but has not since. We were able to sand the window sill and doorjamb he chewed, patch and paint with no lasting damage done. Our boy Jarvis will chew if not given another outlet. He will also chew for attention. He goes for the corners of tables, the corners of computers and iPads, and he will take my shoes, bring them to the room where I am, and chew them in front of me. He is doing it to get us to interact with him, vs. Diablo who was teething.

Do your guys have any chew toys? Diablo stopped chewing when we gave him something to gnaw on. He chews on a Kong. Jarvis now has a tennis ball, and when he chews it, we pick up a toy and play with him. We will not play with him if he chews tables/ipads/computers/shoes. If he does that, he gets the item taken away and we substitute an acceptable chewing item (tennis ball, kong) and if he accepts the substitution with good grace, we then pick up a toy and play 2-3 minutes later. We are trying to teach him to go for one of the acceptable chewing options by reinforcing with play when he does so.

Chris, my son has a F3 male who was somewhat "destructive" as a kitten and young adult. He would knock anything off a table, counter, shelf, or anything above the floor. He really was fascinated by gravity. He would scratch a lot of objects. He would chase the other cat relentlessly. My son was ready to rehome him. The cat was put on Prozac (fluoxetine) which helped.
First, remove and put away anything of value. Second, as mentioned above, get a lot of scratching posts. Third, keep playing with the cat. The mental stimulation is what the cat is craving.
And now for the good news. The cat is now 5 years old. Off Prozac. Still proving gravity by knocking things to the floor. But is a very nice cat. The cat has become personable and no longer a problem.

Thanks. there still hope and yes we did but anything of value away.

hi,

I had 6 cats before and i got them true the end of there natural life and has you probably know they are all different but these two understand just what they want . when we tell them to stop, they stop but 30 second after they do it again and again to punish them we lock them and a room for say 30 mins but immediatelly
they go back to continue .

So like i said before nature will probably take over and has they get older they will hopefully be less destrutive , We love them no matter what and in a few years from now we will just have to buy new furniture....

Thanks

One more suggestion -- try giving them raw chicken legs or wings to gnaw on a couple times a week. It might help with their need to chew stuff and they may still be getting in some adult teeth so having something to gnaw will help with that too.

There are also products such as Bitter Apple (some use Tabasco sauce!) that you can put on items to discourage them from chewing.

I have a question- do your guys chew only when you are around?

I have found that my three do not respond well to negative reinforcement. If we take something from them, a lot of times they don't understand why we are taking it from them. My guys also don't really get the concept of time out as a punishment, that is why we do the redirection. We try to give them a good substitute, and we praise heavily for good behavior. When they do get a time out, it is a bit disguised. So if Jarvis is upset with Diablo, we will take Jarvis to a separate room, give him treats, and play with him 1:1 for 15-30 minutes so he gets a break from Diablo and he isn't being punished, he is being rewarded for seeking out the human to let us know that he is annoyed/upset with Diablo. We are really giving Diablo a time out away from Jarvis, but doing it in a way that Diablo isn't being punished for normal cat behavior, and Jarvis is getting the break he needs.

I like that Idea. But, I will have to really think on that to apply it to Regie and my hair....
Wait... Nikki, You could come out here and when Regie starts being a pain, you could take me out to dinner and Regie could play with Kiki.
Ummmm...maybe not too good and idea. Your better half is WAY bigger than me.... ;)
