I have a question- do your guys chew only when you are around?

I have found that my three do not respond well to negative reinforcement. If we take something from them, a lot of times they don't understand why we are taking it from them. My guys also don't really get the concept of time out as a punishment, that is why we do the redirection. We try to give them a good substitute, and we praise heavily for good behavior. When they do get a time out, it is a bit disguised. So if Jarvis is upset with Diablo, we will take Jarvis to a separate room, give him treats, and play with him 1:1 for 15-30 minutes so he gets a break from Diablo and he isn't being punished, he is being rewarded for seeking out the human to let us know that he is annoyed/upset with Diablo. We are really giving Diablo a time out away from Jarvis, but doing it in a way that Diablo isn't being punished for normal cat behavior, and Jarvis is getting the break he needs.

hi,

after 2 or 3 time when I saw that 30 mins away did not do anything I just stop because nothing came of it.
I also think that my female Zoe is the one who start and Charlie just follow when I call back the breeder she told me that Charlie never did anything like this before and I believe her.

When Zoe was at 3 to 4 month old she would destroy any type of clothing or Blanquette at that time I had 4 cats and they each had a bed with hole a gift from Zoé if we forgot to put away any clothes for sure we find some hole.

So thanks again.

A time out for more than 10-15 minutes will be meaningless to a cat - they won't remember why they were 'put away'. Most behavioralists do not condone negative feedback but I will scruff and say no then put the cat down and turn my back - that has worked pretty good for getting my point across.

I like that Idea. But, I will have to really think on that to apply it to Regie and my hair....
Wait... Nikki, You could come out here and when Regie starts being a pain, you could take me out to dinner and Regie could play with Kiki.
Ummmm...maybe not too good and idea. Your better half is WAY bigger than me.... ;)

LOL, Cary! Would love to, wish you were closer!
Michael is a sucker for cat photos, so you'd be pretty safe so long as you brought photos. :)

My breeder was very much against the negative reinforcement. He insisted that SVs are so persistently naughty that I would be saying no all day long. I agree that the key is redirecting for most behaviors and negative reinforcement (scruffing, blowing, squirting, yelling, hissing, whatever) should be reserved for the less frequent really bad behavior.

In the early summer of 2012 we got a F3 Female Savannah and we realized that she needed a challenge , so we got her a F3 male playmate and built them a safe area outdoors , last spring we got our F3 male a buddy that can roughhouse with him ,Casey is a F2B that loves deep snow and must bribed back inside, Ellie says ,he's like a 2 year old. he is a huge social kitten that likes people, pets , treats, teaser toys, water , something to chase ,outdoors, friendy people, steak ,raw. I was talking to Casey's breeder and she said the cats would enjoy a log in their enclosure to walk on so yesterday I took a walk in the woods with my chainsaw and made the cats this DSCN0543.JPG DSCN0534.JPG DSCN0540.JPG DSCN0541.JPG and they love it and it's now their favorite scratching post. I know the pond looks nasty, new pump and filter will be here this Monday so I can drain, clean and refill it, also the ground cover is starting to grow.

Casey's weight was 18 lbs. 10 oz. on his Vets scale at 11 months old, he's a little bigger now, Stacee keeps a log in her enclosures but I needed something for them to climb so I elevated the log, I also saw the best scratching posts are FREE in the woods and it does not matter if the bark is on or off. Paige have you seen Stacee's video of her pond in her enclosure ? it's very nice!
