Dooley still challenged

Good News!

They found a foreign body that was blocking the small intestine. It was about the size of a quarter and they are reviewing the 3 sets of X-rays and the ultrasound to see how it could have been missed. I personally believe, they were too busy measuring organ sizes and comparing them to past X-rays to spend time looking for what I believed was the primary suspect of our Kong destroying boy.

I won't get an evening update as surgery pushed up until the time they generally make those calls. They are expecting to keep him there another couple days. Despite doing fine through the surgery with only a small incision there was a lot of biopsies that went along with it. The surgeon also mentioned that he attempted to push the blockage into the colon, but it was pretty wedged in and needed an incision to remove it.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers, they have worked their wonders yet again.

Special thanks to Rafiki who filled me with the info needed to make the right decisions.

I'll leave you with this little gem, which reminds us to always check the simplest explanations first.

No wonder that boy did not want dinner....he was too full from eating up every piece of plastic in the house! Did they manage to remove all the syringe bits?

Thanks Patti!

I'm grateful we will continue to have this little tough guy around. At the same time I really need to understand how they missed seeing this quarter size piece of rubber on multiple X-rays. In hindsight it's all too easy to put together as we mentioned his appetite was depressed after short feeding him in the early evening with a late arrival home ahead of his last meal and meds for the day. It's a bit of a juggling act keeping his meds in him and keeping him hungry enough to take on his food with the meds.

Known chewer, voracious appetite, stops eating, starts vomiting......

Ockham's Razor, among competing hypothesis, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected. In this case, a hungry cat and a known chewer eating something he shouldn't have left the other suspects in the dust.

Rubber typically doesn't show up on x-rays, which is why when I suspect a bowel obstruction I always insist on an ultrasound.

Went to visit Dooley and he's still a bit out of it. Low dose of narcotics to help him with his pain as well. He was walking slowly but not as gingerly as when he was at home.

My job with this visit was to try to get him to eat something. I had his favorite treat, spinach, Dino's venison which he runs to find the tiniest of scraps of and then his regular chow. He wasn't much interested in any of it so I got about an ounce in him feeding him off my fingers and a bully stick.

He was attentive enough to take notice of his paint for cats game, but too tired to thump the mouse. He also just wanted to rest, so I got his carrier where he and his brother will oft find refuge and proceeded to finger feed him a bit more.

In all, I was just happy to see him and know that he was on the path to recovery. He's a fighter and no matter how adverse things are, he always does something to let you know he's still a kitten. Over the last few years, oft filled with heartache and sorrow, he reminds us to smile and remember how his departed brethren made us happy. Just the bravest of souls, and continues to make his mark on all he meets. A fighter, a grumbler and of course a mischievous sweetheart.

Here's a quick shot in his carrier at the hospital and the piece that came off a Kong 3-4 weeks ago.
