Trance just had a heck of a coughing spell. Seriously her face looked like she was choking but because I had taken the food out of there and also by the fact that I just woke her and Nakaia up I know she had nothing in her mouth. She was only coughing for like 30 seconds... I did see her cough once before in the quarantine period but it was literally like 2 second cough and she was eating so I thought/think it was that...

Hopefully whatever this cough was is like a fur ball... maybe it is because of the Worlds Best clumping litter... either way I'll be watching her and if it happens again she's going to the vet!

Last time I saw something like that Sabriel had a hair ball, but before that last time I saw something like that was Neka sick... Although she was doing the coughing thing long before she had the lymphoma...

Blah, PLEASE let this be a one time thing...

Shhh. Brandy. Cats are like people. They get tickley throats too. Just keep a watchful eye on things.

Like Deborah, I have also put dishes inside of containers but I would not trust a flimsy aluminum roaster. I have one of those large under-the-bed storage containers and put them in there. They can climb in there - eat, drink, and create messes to their hearts' content but still keep it restricted to the container.

I also have bricks at the bottom of garbage cans and chains on cabinet doors...

So.. I let the kittens out to play a lot today. When I'm sleeping or gone they're in their cat kennel the whole time, when I'm here/up they're out with me or in the cat room playing with their toys. Today is the first time they both ventured down stairs, before they seemed afraid of stairs so I'm assuming Kim may not have them in her home or they just didn't know what was down the stairs. Thankfully I have a split foyer house and I was able to close the door going to the down stairs living room before they got that far. I haven't introduced them to the ferrets yet and I also don't want Sabriel all stressed out.

So today, Trance was a bit naughty but it was my fault in the end. She had gone pee and poo on their bedding in the kennel. She could have gone anywhere in my upstairs area and instead she went where she had gone that first night I got the new litter box... So I was kind of happy she didn't go on any of my stuff but yeah..
At first I was a bit mad, because I knew she knew how to use the litter box and it was literally right next to her so it's not like she couldn't get to it in time. She also did it right in front of me, even with me trying to get her to stop.

Turns out, I can't scoop their litter box like I do Sabriels. With Sabriel's litter box I scoop the middle and top of it, she never goes on the bottom so all of her litter comes out in clumps. I'm not sure if it's because they had the pine litter before or what but I found out both kittens will scoop to the bottom of the litter and go on the floor of the box and then just paw litter over it. So I investigated why Trance refused to use her litter box even though I had been scooping it... The majority of the bottom was covered in a damp litter which I'm assuming their paws were getting into when they would go in their and also when they would dig for the bottom to go... What I don't understand is they don't do it with their poo, only their urine... That's why i didn't notice it before I'm assuming, ... there was enough little balls of urine I was assuming it was just getting broke apart when they both went to the box...

Anyway so now I know Nakaia is using the box... she may be using it too much. Not sure if she just likes scooping in there or if she may have a uti. She kept going in and out of there and tossing litter around. She still is. I know from when they had a little litter box that she really, really likes to move it around and get it all just right over her stuff so maybe that's what she's doing? I don't know..

Trance has gone in the box one time since I cleaned it out entirely and put in the new formula - the World's Best Multi-Cat formula. So hopefully she continues to do so..

When I got their bedding out of the washer I once again sprayed it front and back with the natures miracle for cats and then put it in the dryer. When I got it out of the dryer I put it in with them. I've seen them both laying down on it and I've seen them both sitting normally on it -- so hopefully they can't smell Trance's accident.

I'll be more thorough about cleaning their litter box in the future that's for sure.

Yes if the litter is damp, mine do not like to cover. So their poo just sits there till it dries. Since Trance scrapes to the bottom, and the bottom is damp, she says " Nope! Not gonna do it here. "

Oh, just an observation.. Please don't be offended.. She wasn't " a bit naughty." It isn't naughty to go pee/poo. She was trying to tell you in the only way she knows that the box was unsuitable for her. That is being communicative.. Not naughty.. :) Remember Brandy, they pick up on our thoughts and if we say these little things.. even in our minds.. they pick up on them and feel we are mad at them when they were only trying to communicate. It is kinda like the power of positive thinking. Our thoughts become reality. Very much so with intellegent animals since they read our thoughts. ( I have observed this with my girls...OFTEN ) :)

Thanks Cary, I'll try to remember that in the future. Usually I'm fairly good about always having a positive attitude around them but like today when Trance did what she did, and before when they got their food all over there bedding it gets a little frustrating and I'll try to remember it's not their fault. I mean they did it yes but they're likely trying to communicate with it like you said...

As long as you are not taking my comment as scolding. It is NOT scolding. ;)

And it is understandable you becoming a little upset.

It can be very challenging to understand and interpret our cats' behavior sometimes. To them it is obvious what they are trying to say but to us humans it's not so easy! You did good figuring out what Trance was trying to tell you and remedying it.

This time Nakaia had a coughing fit but it was while she was eating... I think the kittens need to stop eating their food so fast...

Trance had 3 coughing fits today, the first was the worst and then she had 2 very small ones after that. This is like the 5th time I've seen it happen, who knows how often it's happening while I'm at work..

Nakaia just had the one while she was eating.

Either way I'm getting them both checked out this Saturday at 10:30.

Not sure if it's a Upper Respiratory thing or what. It seems to come on when she's been sitting still. If she's out running with Nakaia or in the cat room with all the toys she hasn't had an issue. So I don't think it's asthma or something.

There's no discharge though for either of the cats, their eyes are fine, their noses are fine, I haven't seen any sneezing. So that makes me think it's not a URI. Although today it did sound a little wet with Trance so maybe there is some snot or something in her nose I'm not seeing or that is just really clear?

I've kept Sabriel away from them since the coughing has continued..
