It's hard enough to justify 2K when there are tons of free needy kittens in shelters.

True there are tons of low cost needy kittens in shelters, not usually free but almost free some locations. Here in San Francisco I think it is ~$200 (we paid $180 14 years ago to adopt a feral kitten here). BUT there aren't tons of Savannahs out there in shelters. The reason you pay the money is because you are focused on a specific breed, that has been selected for characteristics. You want a certain look or a certain type of cat. In the Savannah's case you want an elegant athletic look and you like a high energy interactive cat. That's not so easy to walk into a shelter and find.

The more expensive kittens from the better type of breeder are not necessarily likely to come with as many medical issues. The lines are well-researched, many breeders screen for HCM and although screening isn't a perfect method when you have 3 or 4 generations of screened cats you can feel a little safer about heart disease. That and looking for structurally sound cats, and culling out the cats that produce problems. A cut-price breeder is probably more inclined to keep breeding a cat that is producing defects than a breeder that prides themselves on the quality of their kittens.

We all choose where to spend our money. I think when you average out the purchase price over the lifetime of the cat... and balance against the joy it brings...then $5K is not that outrageous. But only if you have that money to spend, and not everyone can. Wanting an F2 for $2K is very much champagne taste on a beer budget. I would think it more sane to be looking for the best F4-F5 and you may find you get an amazing cat for that. I would pit the intelligence of my current F5 kittens against an F1 btw...I have both in my household. My F5s descend from my original F2 female and she was the smartest of cats...but her progeny and grandprogeny inherited that from her and remind us of her every day. You can find the looks and the personality at F4 level, you just have to be more selective and it might take more time to find.

Excellent points made. Thanks for that valuable opinion.

And I'll be blunt; I don't think it's worth spending 5K on ANY animal up front. It's hard enough to justify 2K when there are tons of free needy kittens in shelters.
Then you need to look for a kitten within your budget, which is unlikely to be an F2. Later generation Savannahs are priced the same as any well bred purebred breed, but if it is higher serval content you want then you are going to pay a steeper price. Breeding high generation Savannahs isn't like throwing two moggies together - it is costly, time consuming, and often heart breaking when things don't go as hoped.

I DO believe higher F generation has a correlation with the higher intelligence and bonding strength of these animals.
Well I have to disagree with you here - I've had F1 through F6 and find most of them all equally intelligent, and equally mischiveous.

Yes, we are going tomorrow to see a kitten there. You actually called her?
Nope, threw it on facebook, asked how old he is, if she screened for parasites or anything, health guarantee, etc...the only thing I did not mention was $$$$. The pics look nice but (& yes I know it's NOT my business) I don't want you disappointed when this new SV doesn't act the way you expect it to. Go see the new little guy, if there's a strong connection you'll definitely know it but your heart may need more time to heal. All I got back was "He's being looked at on Saturday do you want me to contact you if he's not taken?" I told her "please do". All the other breeders offered dates for expected litters & answered the questions I asked & even asked their own questions. Take your better half with you & ask her to be the "bad customer"; write a list of questions to take with you so you don't forget any of them when that extra cute SV is mesmerizing you....you already know he is a gorgeous kitten! The fb page is what she uses to sell her SVs, I got ONE answer from a previous buyer, the kitten is doing great & yes they would purchase from her again if they ever wanted another one. That person was told about this Forum because she asked questions as to feeding, size, & growling...if she comes over to visit the forum maybe she will contact you here & let you know herself how her SV has done. Good luck today!

Once again, I think you are headed for heartbreak (or hopefully just disappointment) if you find a breeder who is going to sell their F1s-F2s for the prices that were quoted in this discussion.

I agree with Brigitte- why not simply put that money towards the nicest generation kitten from a reputable breeder that you can afford?

Thanks for looking into this for me and doing some investigating. I really appreciate that!

We will go look at the kitten today and see what happens. I do know it will not be the same kitten as Servo. And, I think a new little boy will help me heal. I do believe how you interact with your cat guides how their personality develops. I used to constantly talk to servo and play with him. He developed into a very talkative and responsive cat. He knew how much he meant to us and what his place was in the family. And I think if I get a kitten young enough, it will end up with a great personality. The nurture part of it will be great. And I know the nature part of it has to do with the breeding. I'm not saying Servo wasn't a PITA a lot of the time when he was a young boy. But with a lot of patience and training, you can take out most of the bad behaviors. I will say this breeder has answered all our questions and provided references. And, she has really stepped up to the plate as far as payment arrangements. While we are there, are there any red flags to look for at the 'facility'?

Yes, I agree an F1 is out of the question. An F2 would be a stretch for sure and should bring up red flags if priced so cheap. We are currently looking For F3's in the 2K range. I think that can reasonably be had if you are willing to sacrifice some type or coloring issues. I LOVE Savannah cats and we are just trying to get the best cat for the best price on a budget. I'm not saying a beautiful cat isn't worth 10K. If I had 1M in the bank, sure I'd go down to drinkwater (close to where my grandmother lives) and drop 10-15K on a spectacular cat. But, I don't. I've go to work within my budget.

I'm surprised that everybody is saying the F5's are just as good for less money. In my initial investigating, most breeders stated that you are losing the Serval type and activity level when the Fgen drops.

Who are most breeders? Many of the breeders on this forum breed F5's...you have heard just the opposite here...

As for Drinkwater...have never seen Doreen sell a kitten for less than $17,000...

Gosh morbius, for the life of me I can't understand the breeders' comments about the lower generations. What they say about type may have been the case years ago, but not anymore. And there are a lot of people here and on Facebook (savannah cat enthusiasts group) who have lower generation cats and can testify that their energy and intelligence is huge.

I have an F6 who is more intelligent and manipulative than my 2 F2s. He wears the F2s out when it comes to play, is awake most of the day when the others are asleep, and gets into the most trouble. I think he is a 3 year old child in the disguise of a cat.
