Most shelters are overwhelmed so yes, are not going to transport out of state when they have so many others to deal with... we're lucky if someone takes the time to let the breed rescue know and have a chance of getting someone there.

Yea Savannah's are technically illegal in new York city but so are ferrets, sugar gliders, ball pythons, large birds, and just about everything else that isn't a domestic dog or cat yet everyone still has them. If I had a dollar for everytime I police officer stopped me to pet the wallaby in his pouch when he was in the city I'd be very rich!

But the problem is it just take once - one person to turn you in and then the animals are the ones who suffer...I live in NJ and my savannahs are legal..I have a litter of 3 week old F5 savannah kittens...I get inquiries every day from NYC and the 5 boroughs...I will not sell to them - I just cannot take the risk of my precious babies getting confiscated...I choose to do the responsible thing...to watch out for my kittens...however, those of you who think they should be legal should help us legalize them...

Easy for you to say, but running Savannah Rescue has meant for some very stressful times when we've been contacted by a shelter or vet telling us to get the cat out or it will be euthanized by close of day. Once I only got the voice mail a couple hours too late for the Savannah :-(

I personally won't take that kind of risk with my precious kittens and so have refused many a sale to NY over the years. There are definitely breeders happy to take the sales though...

That's awful. When the guy in the Bronx was caught with a siberian tiger in his studio apartment a few years back the tiger was relocated. My exotic vet has her practice in westchester county and once performed a dual surgery to extract a monkeys arm from a big cats stomach to reattach it (surgery was not successfull and the monkey died unfortunately) but both primates and big cats are illegal in New York and the ower was not reprimanded by her nor any officials for bringing them in. technically my low content wolfdog is to be put down under state law which is why as far as I'm concerned she's a husky Malamute mix

it is that guy in the Bronx, with an illegal exotic that ruined it for everyone in NYC...that is what I mean...it only takes once. many vets will not reprimand anyone, which I am thankful for...

That being said, we are nor reprimanding here...many of us just will not sell to illegal states for the reasons mentioned.

Welcome NYCzoo. Quite a menagerie you have. Love the fennecs. Cuteness overload. Congratulations on acquiring your savannahs. They will definitely add interest to your life. If you don't mind telling, what is your attraction to unusual companion animals?

The wallaby stemmed from a sunmer in australia with a friend who had one as a pet. Fell in love. The fennecs were actually a rescue from a friend of mine who is sadly terminally ill and has been spending too much time in the hospital to car for her pets. It can be tough to rehome and rebond a wild animal but they have taken to me wonderfully. I've alway ha a fondness for exotics. The bonds formed with a dog tame wild animal are just so rewarding. I would never be interested in owning anything dangerous or unpredictable or something just for display or tha would be a purely outdoor animal. The wallaby spends most of the day outside but eats in the house, loves to watch tv with us, and sleeps on the couch (he's pad trained for anyone who is wondering). It's funny when they first come home it takes some getting used to... Being greeted by a wallaby and all... But after the years pass I really start to lose the awe factor and they kind of become just like a family dog.

Thanks Alex. Do the fennecs smell musky? When I worked with foxes during my days as a wildlife rehabilitator, they (and consequently me too) had quite an aroma.
